This little gem is from my very first Fanzine issue. The BBC ran a poll for the Icon of the century and 'bugger me' who should win it but some dead Yank. Crazy as it sounds Jim actually walked it. Bet that was a shock for the stuffy old men in plaid suits Jim Morrison BBC Icon Of The Century Xmas 1999.It’s a shame that the dear old BBC has never followed up on it’s ‘Icon of the Century’ poll with any programmes about the winner. Perhaps they thought it a forgone conclusion and another Beatles victory with John Lennon the clear winner . Imagine ( sorry about the pun ) their shock when Jim Morrison slaughtered all comers with over 40% of the votes more than twice his nearest rival, Kurt Cobain I think. A clear indication of how relevant The Doors still are today. It would be nice if major TV corporations were to show some interest in the band, who are infinitely more worthy of coverage than most of the forgettable crap we are plagued with on both cable/satellite and terrestrial TV channels. OK so we’ve been palmed off with the odd half hour now and then to keep us quiet but Scorpywag think it’s time someone actually put a bit of effort in and found out what these guys were really about rather than an endless stream of NME type cliches.

It's interesting that in a day and age that has polls and awards for just about everything how relevant The Doors are. The Channel 4 Poll was massive and had half a million people involved in the vote. The BBC Icon Poll was promoted by both BBC1 and BBC2, BBC radio including the flagship Radio 1. It featured in Radio Times which is the BBC magazine and also the national press. Voting if I recall correctly was via phone and post and lasted for a large slice of 1999. I don;t know how many votes were cast but like Ch 4's poll it was a major event. I was frankly gobsmacked when the result for the Musical Icon was announced as I thought Lennon was a certainty (he came 3rd) with possibly Elvis as an outside bet as he was very popular here. For Jim to win was pretty seismic and considering during the 70s I did not even know a Doors fan in my area outside of myself. It was annoying that no follow up programmes were made which I am sure would have been the case if a Beatle had won. Taken in conjunction with the Ch4 Poll it shows how far The Doors have become ingrained in the musical psyche of generation after generation. No mean feat for a band that was dead on it's feet by the end of 1970. To recover with an album like LAW and then slowly work it's way into the very fabric of the musical population shows that something special was at work. Of course the Morrison Myth was a big part of this but the music sounds as fresh and relevant today as it did in 1971 when Jim died. For me this is one of the most remarkable feats in Doors History as when the band existed barely anybody in the UK gave a crap about Morrison or The Doors. Remarkable.
