The Purple review is very scathing and it does not sound like anything worth the cost....the book will most likely be a CD book with a few pictures and a lot of useless facts..these releases will NOT feature anything NEW in the slightest.....I have been reading some reviews of the others in the series from fans of the bands concerened and the general concencus is these releases are garbage.....they do not feature comments from band members just journalists and Z grade bit part players and people who have no link whatsoever with the bnads concerned.....my local record shop is full of these DVDs and they look crap........I will check it out but I wanna know whats on it before I buy it...... This is the website for the people who are producing this DVD.... www.classicrockproductionsonline.com/default.asp

This DVD came out today and unlike what you may have read on some other Doors sites this is NOT an official DVD and is part of a series of Brit DVDs which feature a dozen or more UK bands such as Zeppelin, Purple, T Rex and Thin Lizzy......the DVDs are not at all well put together and feature none of the members of the band and are generally just a bunch of journalists and D rate musicians nattering on about the band....so approach with caution Two Disk DVD and Book Set This is the ultimate critical review of the Doors, on record, on film and live on stage. Drawing on rare film and television archive material this independent and highly authoritative review revisits every single Doors album and critically reassesses the work of this legendary band from the ’67 debut album right through to the seminal LA Woman. A leading team of music critics, musicologists and working musicians considers vintage performances by the Doors and traces the secrets of the band’s success. This hard hitting powerful film makes no concessions to labels, artists or management and pulls no punches when it comes to deciding what made the music work and, sometimes, why it didn’t. Features: Light My Fire Break on Through The End Love Me Two Times People are Strange Hello I Love You LA Woman Riders on the Storm… and many more Editorial Control: To ensure editorial control, the film is totally unauthorized and has not been authorized or approved by past or present members or management of the band.

Yup, this is the one I bought. It's mainly a lot of non-people giving their views on each song on each album, then they give the album a rating. It does have footage of Ray, John and Robbie talking about certain songs, but I think I've seen it before somewhere else. There's a cool bit where some guy plays a few riffs and shows you how to do them, if you're into playing guitar!
Now, some of the footage is stuff I've not seen before, BUT I'm a new fan, so it could be stuff you've seen. There's The End and When the Music's over from the IOW festival in 1970, there's some PBS footage and some of the Granada tv performance. I've not seen it all yet, so I'll let you know if there's anything else!

Oh, and the book IS a CD book. A few pictures (but NICE ones!!!) and comments on each song on each album. Not much info in there, just opinions......
Right, off to watch the second CD.....

I assumed you would want to!! Ok, finished watching the second DVD. It's pretty much the same as the first, more of the same people telling you their opinions on certain songs and albums as a whole. Contained more footage from Granada tv in 1968 "Live in Europe", plus some from DR TV in 1968 (A Danish tv comapny) and Touch Me from the "Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" in 1968. The rest of the footage was from Hollywood bowl and promotional videos. Their overall opinions were that Soft Parade and Waiting for the Sun were the worst of the albums (3 stars), with LA Woman and The Doors the best (with 5 stars). There was a bit of information in there about where some songs came from, but it was stuff that even I knew already. (Although that could be due to Rick talking non-stop, frequently enough, so that I absorbed all that is known about the Doors) I think it's probably a good DVD for those who are new to the Doors and want to learn a bit more about the background to their songs. Probably not worth the money for someone who has all the performances already, because you only see snippets of them anyway and people talk over them a lot! On the whole though, they were very positive about the Doors. Said things along the lines of that they should go down in the top 10 rock acts of all time and that all front men are now measured up to Jim. Hope that's helpful! Alex, I'll put a complete review together for you and PM you with it

Thats interesting...the DVD we saw released here by Classic Rock is out in the US on July 26th but is renamed Inside The Doors 1967-1969 A Critical Review instead of 1967-1971 as in the title we have....strange! "This is the ultimate critical review of The Doors, on record, on film and live on stage. Drawing on rare film and television archive material, this independent and highly authoritative review revisits and critically reassesses the work of this legendary band from their 67 debut album The Doors, to Strange Days and Waiting for the Sun. A leading team of music critics, musicologists and working musicians considers vintage performances by The Doors and traces the secrets of the bands success. Featured tracks include: Light My Fire, Break on Through, The End, Love Me Two Times, People are Strange, When the Musics Over, Hello I Love You, Back Door Man and many more." Amazon.com.
