Inspired Philadelphia Concert Captures The Band On Its Last Tour, Available From Rhino Handmade November 29 LOS ANGELES — Mr. Mojo was indeed rising when The Doors returned to the road in 1970 after a year plagued by concert cancellations stemming from controversial charges of lewd, indecent and drunken behavior from a March 1969 show in Miami. The Doors had just completed recording the astonishing Morrison Hotel when they launched a tour in April 1970 in Boston. Back on stage for what would be the band’s final tour before singer Jim Morrison’s death the following year, the band was dialed in and at their blistering best. Rhino Handmade Recordings captures one of the highlights from that spring tour with THE DOORS: LIVE IN PHILADELPHIA. Featuring the complete show recorded May 1, 1970 at the Spectrum, the two-disc set is available November 29 at www.rhinohandmade.com and select retail outlets for a suggested price of $29.98. The evening began with the local fire marshal telling fans to return to their seats and clear the aisles or the show would be cancelled. When The Doors – Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist John Densmore and guitarist Robby Krieger – finally took to the stage, the quartet unleashed a stomping rendition of “Roadhouse Blues” from Morrison Hotel. The Philadelphia show found The Doors balancing the band’s mystical explorations with gritty blues and includes the band’s cover of Howlin’ Wolf’s “Back Door Man,” their own hits, “Light My Fire” and “Break On Through (To The Other Side)” along with epic musical voyages through “When The Music’s Over” and Elvis Presley’s “Mystery Train.” Engineer Bruce Botnick recorded several shows – including the Philadelphia concert - on multi-track tape from The Doors’ 1970 tour for the Absolutely Live album. The superior quality of the original tape reflects Botnick’s and his team’s attention to sonic detail. Botnick also mixed and mastered THE DOORS: LIVE IN PHILADELPHIA. All tracks on LIVE IN PHILADELPHIA are previously unreleased. The album’s liner notes vividly set the scene at the Spectrum and include recollections of the show by all three surviving band members. “That was where Doctor J [Julius Erving] played with the Philadelphia 76ers,” says Manzarek of the Spectrum, with a note of awe. “We were out there on the court – it was like the 76ers and the Lakers, but we were all on each other’s side. It was us and Philadelphia. And Philadelphia is a great, great town for rock and roll – one of the best in the country – not to mention cheese steak, which I had the next night.” “We didn’t have monitors and the mains were pointed away from us,” Krieger recalls. “I couldn’t hear a damn thing. I felt like I was on acid. But I felt we played pretty well.” “Jim was in good spirits,” notes Densmore. “By that I mean he was in that delicate balance where he had a buzz – which took the edge off his nerves – but wasn’t too intoxicated.” THE DOORS: LIVE IN PHILADELPHIA Disc 1 1. Announcer “Sit Down” 2. Tuning 3. “Roadhouse Blues” 4. “Break On Through (To The Other Side)” 5. “Back Door Man/Love Hides” 6. “Ship Of Fools” 7. “Universal Mind” 8. “When The Music’s Over” 9. “Mystery Train” 10. “Wake Up!” 11. “Light My Fire” Disc 2 1. The Concert Continues 2. “Maggie M’Gill” 3. Roadhouse Blues (Reprise) 4. “Been Down So Long/Rock Me Baby” 5. One nice touch though is the price $30 for a double disc set...nice one....and its available in a limited way from retail outlets.....a bit of that humble pie that I spoke about a couple of years ago comes to mind.....I can almost taste it! Well done BMA and lets hope the days of ripping off the fans and shite service are a thing of the past.

Let me just say as someone who lives near and who has frequented Philly... ITS NOT A GREAT PLACE! lol
The people are crooked. The music is generally terrible and from what my dad says it wasnt much better back then. But now Philly is definately NOT the place for rock and roll. Its full of bad rappers and reggae and wanna be nu metal bands. There is a small curcuit of Irish Folks bands which i find oddly out of place but refreshing.
But its not a nice place. Its a slightly less packed version of New York.. and a little less commercial.. a little more ghetto.
Unless you're black and/or are packin' you better watch your back in that city.

Plan 9 (Record Store) in Richmond, Virginia Reviews Jnauary 5 2006 In Tune Plan 9 reviews "Live In Philadelphia" (The Doors) Doors: "Live In Philadelphia" Review by John Benson Over three decades have passed since Jim Morrison last woke up in the morning and had himself a beer. Yet fans - many of whom weren't born when the Lizard King checked out - continue to let it roll, baby, roll with The Doors. Unlike classic rocker Jimi Hendrix, whose catalog seems to grow every year with a rare concert recording (more than likely an oft bootlegged album) getting an official release, The Doors' library apparently isn't as vast, with very few shows of quality existing. Miraculously, that all began to change a few years ago with a couple of concerts being released to the public, including a noteworthy 1970 Detroit date. Now there's the recently discovered "Live In Philadelphia," which was recorded a few days before the Motor City show. What this double-disc 18-track concert may lack in extended setlist, it makes up for in both quality and intimacy, showcasing the magic-in-the moment concert presence Morrison provided. Unfortunately, those shows were few and far between as the often intoxicated and belligerent singer stumbled his way through concerts. As for the City of Brotherly Love show, which was recorded at The Spectrum, "Back Door Man," "When The Music's Over," "Maggie M'Gill" and "Been Down So Long" are worth the investment. Interestingly, the latter track can be found on the band's last studio album, 1971's "L.A. Woman," which never received a proper tour as Morrison died later that same year. If for no other reason than rediscovering your love of The Doors, "Live In Philadelphia" is definitely worth cracking a cold one to and, well, letting it roll all night long. www.richmond.com/music/output.aspx?Article_ID=4064024&Vertical_ID=127&tier=1&position=2

THE DOORS LIVE IN PHILADELPHIA '70
The infamous Miami incident of March 1969 created sufficient controversy to cut short the remainder of that tour. The Doors played a date or two to round out the year, but it wasn't until 1970 that they recovered their momentum. The outstanding Morrison Hotel album was in stores, and the band was riding high on a wave of potent synergy. They kicked off the new tour in Boston on April 10th.
May 1st found them at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, a venue that had a reputation for unruliness. Ray Manzarek recalls the atmosphere that night in the liner notes to this release: "We couldn't even begin to play until all the people were in their seats. They were all jammed up at the front—anticipating Morrison, Densmore, Krieger and Manzarek—but we couldn't take the stage until they went back to their seats and listened in an orderly fashion. Only then would the Fire Marshal allow the show to continue. His whole trip was: You have to clear the aisles. What if there's a fire? Well, the place was made of metal and concrete; what was going to burn, except for The Doors' music? So we waited until the Fire Marshal gave the OK to the MC, who said, 'Ladies and gentlemen, from Los Angeles, California, The Doors.' Immediately, everyone who'd been made to sit down stood right back up. But by then it was too late. We just burned and jammed and played our music with the whole place rushing up to the stage."

(Announcer) Now wait a second. Hey, now last week, we were all out in the park. We had 25,000 people. 25,000 hippies out in the park, man. It was beautiful. Okay? Alright, now we want everything to be cool here. We want to do more concerts, and want to do more "be-ins". But man, like.. the man just says there's a couple of small rules. There's your brothers and sisters sitting in the front seats. They want to see this show too. Now, you're just gonna have to move back. Okay? Hey, man. You people are just gonna have to move back.. go back to your seats.. and sit down, man, and make aisles, or there's just no show. Alright, come on. Now, we're not trying to bullshit you man. We're trying to lay it right on the fucking line, man. Just move back to your seats. Hey, you people down here.. come on, man.. (person in crowd yells "We want the Doors!") Yeah, well we want The Doors too, man, and this is the only way we're going to get 'em. So we're either going to listen, or we ain't gonna to have it. You know what I mean? And I ain't trying to bullshit you. Come on.. give you.. give yourselves a break man, because the longer you people take, they're just.. the longer they're gonna hold the show up. And the shorter show we're gonna have. You know? Kids in front, you know, like, this isn't helping us either, you know? Like, just, you know, like, you know.. every time this happens, we're just gonna stop the show. And you're just gonna screw up all these people up here. And they're your brothers and sisters, man, just as.. just as much as they are mine.
What? The gentleman over here.. on my right.. is the manager of The Doors. And he says we.. he just said.. that The Doors don't want anybody up here. That they have enough problems, and enough troubles right now. Okay? Right. Right. And like.. like the thing is, like they're gonna wait.. an hour.. until this whole thing is clear. Now if we wait an hour.. that's just gonna cut down on the show time because we gotta be out at a certain time. So all you kids down here. You gotta go back to your seats. This is a concert, man. We'll be out in the park Sunday. But this is a concert. (crowd starts chanting "bull-shit")
You know, like.. you gotta stay there and sing man, our hair is just as long as yours.
(Bill Siddons) We really hate to be nasty, folks but we just can't start the show. The fire marshalls told us we can't start the show until you get out of the isles. So if you want to sit there until midnight, have a nice sit, but the show won't start until the area is clear. Sorry about that. I don't make the rules.
(Announcer) Alright, okay, hello? Alright, we're getting pretty close. But the only thing holding us up is just the few people back here. The people back there, if you want to talk to them, because they're the only ones holding up your good time. Just a few people down here. Every minute you kids stay here, you're cutting off their.. the playing time, and those people a good time. See, we're all ready.. Morrison and Manzarek, everybody's just standing back there just waiting for a few of these idiots down here. (crowd cheers)
Now there's one more thing.. and only one more thing.. These people.. The Doors.. as soon as you people start coming down.. they're gonna walk off the stage. It's as simple as that. That's what they are telling us. But we want to make this a concert. "Be-in's" are for the park.
(applause/tuning)

Old. She's no. Young. Her dark, red hair. The soft, white skin. Now.. Run to the mirror in the bathroom! Look! She's coming in here. I can't live through each slow century of her moving. I let my cheek slide down the cool, smooth tile. Feel the good, cold, stinging blood. The smooth.. Hissing.. Snakes.. Of rain!

Oh Carol! Don't let me steal your heart away. Oh, I love you little darlin'.. take me all night and day.
Heat cooled down.. motor cooled down.. I can hear that highway sound.. Carol!
(guitar solo starts) Whoa Carol.. Uh.. Uh, Ah.. Whaaaaaa-yeah! (guitar solo continues)
Heat cooled down.. motor cooled down.. I can hear that.. highway sound. Whoa, yeah! Love you little momma, take me all night and day.
(combined organ/guitar solo starts) Uh. Oh, Carol. Whaaa!
(song transitions into organ intro of Soul Kitchen)
Soul Kitchen
Well, the cop said it's time to close.. now. Guess we better go.. now. Really like to stay here.. all night. (cheers) Cars crawl past all stuffed with eyes. Streetlight shed their hollow glow. Your brain seems bruised with.. numb surprise. Still one place to go. Still one place to go.
Let me sleep all night.. in your.. soul kitchen. Warm my mind to your.. gentle stove. Turn me out an I'll.. wander, babe. Stumblin' in the neon.. Whoa, yeah!
(guitar solo) (band settles into groove)
Your fingers weave quick.. minarets. Speakin'.. secret.. alphabets. I.. Light another.. cigarette. Learn to forget. Learn to forget. Learn to forget. Learn.. to forget.
Let me sleep all night.. in your.. soul kitchen. Warm my mind to your.. gentle stove. Turn me out and I'll wander, babe. Stumblin' in the neon.. Whoh.. ahhhhh!!
(organ solo) (band settles into groove)
Now I lay me down to sleep. Pray the lord my soul to keep. If I die before I wake. Pray the lord my soul to take. Take me, baby.. all night long. Won't you hear my song. Love you all night long.
(band settles into groove)
Well, the clock said it's time to close.. now. Know we have to go.. now. Really wanna stay here.. all night. All night. All night!
(song ends/applause)
