The Press Association January 19 2009 Ex-drummer likens Bono to Morrison 6 days ago U2's Bono has been compared to the late Doors singer Jim Morrison. "I'm a dinosaur; I don't know who's out there, but I'd say early Bono, definitely," said John Densmore, the band's former drummer, when asked which modern day singer encapsulates the spirit and charisma of the iconic frontman. Densmore was speaking at the Sundance Film Festival where he and the film's director Tom DeCillo were promoting When You're Strange, which uses original archive footage of the band from the 1960s and 1970s. "I fell into this footage," said DeCillo. "I felt like I was really experiencing something about the Doors that was real, which was kind of personal, and intimate and truthful. "You cannot argue with what is in front of the frame, when it's John, Ray (Manzarek), Robby Krieger, or Jim. They are doing it. It's them." And Densmore was pleased with the results of the documentary, especially when it came to the portrayal of Jim, who died, age 27 of heart failure, aggravated by heavy drinking. "Tom got into Jim's clear, uncompromising spirit, which maybe helped take him out," said John. "Obviously the alcohol did too. But in his lyrics, is some of that. "I think Jim would be happy with what is coming on Tuesday [Barack Obama's inauguration]." www.google.com/hostednews/ukpress/article/ALeqM5gAP7_Wge7G1avPf-r5PRqgv_zlzQ

Bono isn't in the same league as Jim. Bono is third rate by comparison. That doesn't mean that John is wrong, it just means that there is no one out there who can compare with Morrison. Morrison was the greatest rock hero who made his ultimate statement at Miami. No one could top that. Jim himself knew that he had taken the rock performance to its limit and had finished with it in one chaotic evening. He returned to being a poet after that. Trouble is, every rock singer on earth should have given up at that point too. Jim had made the role irrelevant - he had saved our City.
