It's always seemed to me there was a certain circularity of theme between Light My Fire & L.A. Women, in particular the phrasing of lyrics like: "you know that it would be untrue/you know I would be a liar" & the lyrics to L.A. Woman: "If they say I never loved you/ you know they are a liar" Doesn't that seem a reinstatement of theme? I know Robby wrote LMF, but that was the song Jim & The Doors were best known for. What'cha think? Light My FireYou know that it would be untrue You know that I would be a liar If I was to say to you Girl, we couldn't get much higher Come on baby, light my fire Come on baby, light my fire Try to set the night on fire
The time to hesitate is through No time to wallow in the mire Try now we can only lose And our love become a funeral pyre Come on baby, light my fire Come on baby, light my fire Try to set the night on fire, yeah
The time to hesitate is through No time to wallow in the mire Try now we can only lose And our love become a funeral pyre Come on baby, light my fire Come on baby, light my fire Try to set the night on fire, yeah
You know that it would be untrue You know that I would be a liar If I was to say to you Girl, we couldn't get much higher Come on baby, light my fire Come on baby, light my fire Try to set the night on fire Try to set the night on fire Try to set the night on fire Try to set the night on fire Robby's Best Song

i think its posibly just coincidence that they crop up like this, although interesting they sort of refer to different things though i guess. lite my fire doesnt refer tolove in particular, although it could be meaning love. but la woman does refer to love. oops gotta go shopping!

Its interesting as themes seem to reappear throughout the bands career. LMF may be the biggest Doors song ever but it certainly is not a song that defines the group by a long chalk. LAW was one of the few songs written on the spot (if RK is to be believed) during the sessions in 1970 and for me is a wondeful tribute from Jim to the city he loved. I remember reading Artistic vision which takes (for me anyway) a simplistic look at the reasons behind the words. I have always felt Doors songs to be the deepest of any band in rock history. We may never know what Jim Morrison meant but we can always enjoy the conjecture.

I always find it weird that people read or hear of a simplistic explanation of the lyrics & say, 'oh that's it' & really don't seem to think about it anymore, or write it off as being simplistic. A good example of this in Hyacinth House 'what are they doing to please the lions this day' they find out the song was written or rehearsed at Robby's house & he haad cats so that's the explanation of the line.

You probably read that in Artistic Vision......it basically explains the lyric in a simple linear way without taking into account a) Jim was a deep bastard b) he had a wicked sense of humour & c) he was rather more intelligent than most of us. You can go mental trying to figure out what he means. Take The End I have listened to it drunk sober stoned sad happy pissed off and apathetic and it always fills my head with all sorts weird shit. I have little idea other than what I have read of other peoples opinions as to what he meant by it but by God it makes your mind get off its arce a bit. Morrison was the master or wordplay....none better and i have listened to plenty in my time....

Hey folks! I know I'm a bit late with a comment here, but I'm a new member! That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! I was just wondering why lyrics have to have a meaning? Why can't something just be written because that particular choice of words happen to fit together perfectly? How do people get away with writing books that claim to explain every lyric written when, chances are, they don't really know?! On the other hand, why does a lyric have to have a deep and mystical explanation behind it? Why shouldn't RK's cats get a mention in a song?! Maybe I'm just too easily pleased, but I don't mind if the words of a song don't appear to make perfect and immediate sense. As long as the words fit together, the meaning is whatever you make it. You don't need a book to explain it too you! I must confess I've been on the Jack Daniels tonight, so if I'm not making sense anyway, you know why! Love to you all, Sandy Sunshine.

Sandy, My excuse is I'm lazy & i'm sticking with that one.
I think you're right for a lot of bands, an example Hendrix his lyrics aren't that deep he was a musician & just needed words to make songs, that's where his head was at. But Morrison was into words & that's where his head was at & he purposely wanted to add other layers of meaning to his lyrics so that is there. & another but, but that shouldn't interefere with yours or anyone's enjoyment of the song, painting, poem, novel, play, as a matter of fact artists are notorious for not telling what a piece means or the inspiration of it, ask Bob Dylan.
So, now get over here & we'll go out for a drink, although I prefer Bushmills whiskey than Jack Daniels. What's Tennesse product like that doing in England anywho???

You both make good points as there probably are Doors songs that have words that are there to fit musical phrasings ....mostly Krieger though I would venture. As Jim said Morrison lived for words and made a concious attempt to mean something with his poetry and song. He lifted stuff all the time from his favourite books and probably enjoyed it when nobody noticed....
"I like any reaction I can get with my music. Just anything to get people to think. I mean if you can get a whole room full of drunk, stoned people to actually wake up and think, you're doing something."
"When he did the bridge to 'End Of The Night', he said 'Realms of bliss Realms of light' - I said 'Jim, that's William Blake's 'Songs Of Innocence'.' He said, 'I know, but nobody's busted me yet'.The Doors really represented the first time a rock band really tapped into literature, and it worked." - Michael C. Ford, Los Angeles poet

i think a good number of bands want us as the fans to make the lyrics into what ever we want them to be. they can mean a number of different things for different people. nobody has identical fingerprints and perhaps nobody has identical meanings to songs. perhaps lyrics are best left mysterious, so we can allow them to become whatever we want them to be depending on the moods we are in. The meanings of lyrics may also be decided from the very first time we listen to them and what mood we are in and as what Jim would have said, "what station in life we are currently at".

I remember a funny story from The Blue Öyster Cult lead singer Eric Bloom who told of their first tour of Japan. The Cult never revealed their lyrics as they were mysterious/bizarre/plain bonkers but the Japanese trying to be helpful recreated them in the tour programme.....Eric said that very little of what had been put in the programme was actually in the songs but he felt the Japs had nailed the essence of BÖC and some of them were better than what he had written himself.... So perhaps its best if bands NEVER share the lyrics with fans at all and NEVER reveal what the song is about as that takes away a bit of the magic..... I must admit I can remember many songs that I was dissapointed with once I discovered what they were actually on about.....

Hello! I certainly agree that a song can lose its appeal when you find they're about something really mundane! But only a true master of words can make something really mundane sound like something really beautiful and mystical! I don't think it's right that a song should have one meaning. It should be up to the listener to decide for themselves what the song means to them. If everyone had the same ideas about everything, the world would be a quite boring place! And as for Jack Daniels, you can buy in any off licence or supermarket in England! It's not so easy to get Johnny Walker's though. Which is a shame because I'm rather partial to a large swig of that too!

If it contains alcohol, I'll usually find some way to ingest it! Anything but wine that is. It all tastes like vinegar to me! Whisky is definitely my fave, but Vodka, Gin, Martini, Bacardi or anything else with a percentage will do for me! Love from Sandy!

You'll have to tell me when it is, 'cos I have no head for dates! It sounds great, but I've got a 2 year old daughter and I'm a single mum. I could either get her daddy or my parents to look after her for me, but it would mean them having time off work to do it! My mum takes a week off in July for me so I can go camping! I'm a Girl Guide leader, you see! My ex takes a week off in August so I can go to the Beatles Convention in Liverpool. So I'd have to do grovelling a-plenty to get someone to take another week off for me to go galavanting!!! Tell me when it is though and I'll see what I can do!!! Love from Sandy.
