The Jim Morrison Home Legacy Series
By Triangle Development Company
Jim Morrison, The Man
On Decenber 8th, 1943, a young man was born by the name of James Douglas Morrison. He was born into a military family and was the oldest of 3 children. His father, George Stephen Morrison, was an Admiral in the US Navy which caused the family to move around a lot.
Growing up, Jim lived in Clearwater FL, Albuquerque NM, Washington DC, Claremont CA, Alameda CA and Alexandria VA. Jim graduated from George Washington High in Alexandria, VA.
After graduating, Jim didn’t have any plans for college so his parents sent him back down to FL to live with his grandparents while attending St. Petersburg Junior College from 1961-62. Jim lived with his grandparents at 314 N Osceola AVE in Clearwater, FL. He had his own room with a door that led to the outside of the house so he could come and go as he pleased. His room was filled from floor to ceiling with books, all of which he had read, with only a path from the door where he could leave.
Jim didn’t have a car so he took the bus to school. Then one day, Phil Anderson’s brother came to him and said that he had this guy in his class that could use a ride to school. That guy’s name was Jim Morrison. Phil also attended St. Pete. Junior College. Phil introduced himself and from then on, the 2 of them rode together to St. Pete. Junior College in Phil’s green ’55 Chevy.
Phil and Jim became good friends and went to many parties together. Phil remembers that Jim always had a notebook with him that he would jot things down in. Phil also remembers one night at a party in Clearwater Beach, Jim would dazzle people with the Dictionary Game. He would tell everyone to pick any word out of the dictionary and he would tell them what it meant. He was always right.Jim would also manage to walk on the edge of a wall or something tall to get a rise out of people.
It was also at Clearwater Beach that Jim met Mary Werbelow. Mary was a junior at Clearwater High School and a Miss Clearwater contestant. For 3 years Jim and Mary were inseparable. Phil remembers that Jim would act differently around Mary, like he was another person. He was very respectful of her and didn’t hardly drink or curse when she was around. She was his first true love and still held a special place in his heart until he died.
There are many songs written about Mary, including The End, which was a beautiful ballad about their break up. Phil and the rest of the guys remember many fun times with Jim, although no one knew of his interest in music at the time.
Phil remembers that if he went looking for Jim, there was usually three places he could be found if he wasn’t at home: the library, the Francis Wilson Playhouse, or Beaux Arts. Jim loved to sit in the Clearwater Library and read from his favorite books. Jim and Phil would usually also sneak in a bottle of Peach Schnapps while they were there. Jim also liked to sit in the back of the theatre at the Francis Wilson Playhouse and watch rehearsals. He was never in a play, nor did he know anyone in the plays, he just liked to sit and watch.
Jim also frequented the famous Beaux Arts, a modern day coffee house where young artists could share their music and poetry. Phil would drop Jim off there but never went in with him. Jim was known to read his poetry there while playing a ukulele. It was here that Jim met the Owner Tom Reese who encouraged Jim to transfer to FSU in Tallahassee because they had a film program there.
While attending FSU, Jim would hitchhike back to Clearwater to visit Mary and his friends. Jim would often stay at Phil’s house, even after Phil wasn’t living there anymore. Phil’s mother liked Jim a lot. Jim gave Phil’s mom a photo that he said he took and she framed it and hung it on the wall. It was there for a long time. Jim actually didn’t take this photo, but ripped it out of a library book. Phil has recently donated the picture back to the Clearwater Library, where they have it on display in a room dedicated to Jim Morrison, their most famous library card holder. (In this room, you'll also find the "Feast of Friends" door that Triangle Development Company has donated to the Library.) Phil’s mother also carried around a photo of Jim in her wallet. Jim was a very charming guy when he wanted to be.
In 1964 Jim moved to the west coast. He enrolled in film school at UCLA where he met fellow classmate and musician Ray Manzarek.
Mary Werbelow also followed Jim to the West Coast but things didn’t work out and that relationship sadly ended.
That summer, Ray saw Jim on the beach and Jim sang for Ray. Ray immediately loved what he heard and asked if he had more. Of course he did and they talked about getting a band together. Ray knew a guitar player and drummer from his meditation class and they came together to form The Doors.
The name was taken from a poem by William Blake. The Doors began to write songs and played in many dive bars. It was at one of these bars that Jim met Pamela Courson. Pamela would be the woman that he always came back to no matter what and would be with him in the end. After landing a gig at the Whiskey a Go Go in LA, they signed with Elecktra Records in 1966.
The Doors released 6 albums before Jim took a trip to Paris. They had just recorded what would be their last album, LA Woman. Jim went to Paris to write and take a break. He let the others in the band finish the recording. They kept asking him when he would be back but he didn’t know.
One day, The Doors received the phone call that they never wanted to hear. Jim Morrison had been found dead in the bathtub of his Parisian apartment on June 3rd, 1971. His death was ruled a heart attack but there is much speculation about this. No autopsy was performed and the only one to see the body was Pamela.
He was already buried by the time anyone from The Doors got there to see what was going on. Some think it was a drug overdose and some believe that Jim escaped fame and is still living today, maybe somewhere writing. He always wanted to be known for his words, not his looks and that was something that haunted him. Will we ever know the truth? His loving partner, Pamela, left us only 3 years after Jim. She was the last one to see him alive.
Jim Morrison's House - Clearwater, Florida
Jim Morrison lived with his grandparents in Clearwater, Florida for 6 years, three years as a baby from 1944-1947, and again as a teenager from 1961-1963.
The house his grandparents lived in on 314 Osceola Avenue was a beautiful house right on the water with a wonderful view. Jim’s grandparents, Paul and Caroline owned several laundry mats in the area.
Jim lived in the back room of the house with his own private entrance and he could come and go as he pleased. His friend, Phil Anderson, (shown in photo with door at left) would make sure to get him through the door and into bed okay if Jim had too much to drink.
Jim didn’t talk to his grandparents much and his room was filled with books from floor to ceiling. Jim’s brother, Andy, said that he counted Jim’s books before he left for Florida State University and he had a total of 1000 different titles that he had read.
While Jim was living in Florida with his grandparents, he attended St. Pete Junior College and spent a lot of time at the Library, Francis Wilson Playhouse, and the Beaux Arts Coffee House. Popular things to do with his friends included hanging out at Clearwater Beach, driving to the A & W on Gulf to Bay Blvd., and hanging out at the Fun and Sun Motel that was owned by Ruth Whitney Duncan’s parents. Ruth Whitney was the girlfriend of Tom Duncan who Jim hung out with. All of the big musical acts that came into town would stay at the Fun and Sun Motel.

CLEARWATER - To make way for a massive condo/retail project on the bluffs over Clearwater Harbor, developers knocked down four houses. The bungalow at 314 N Osceola Ave. came down last month. Jim Morrison lived there more than 40 years ago with his grandparents, Paul and Caroline Morrison. They operated a coin laundry on S Fort Harrison Avenue; Jim attended St. Petersburg Junior College.
Before sending in the bulldozers, the developers salvaged what they could auction on eBay.
You'll be able to bid on doors (of course) from the home (29 in all), floorboards from Morrison's room, bricks, windows, doorstops, wooden blinds, even a wall-mounted ironing board (little used, if Morrison's friends are believed).
Ben Kugler, 57, Triangle Development's chief executive, didn't know the Morrison connection when he and his business partner bought the property. They're putting two 15-story condo towers along the water and upscale retail shops along Fort Harrison Avenue. Kugler said he will hang a plaque in the south tower to mark where Morrison lived.
The eBay auction will be held in early 2006. All proceeds will go to charity, he said, at least half to Narconon, a drug treatment program based on the teachings of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. Kugler and his partner are Scientologists
Kugler hoped the remaining members of the Doors would play in Clearwater, at Coachman Park, but band manager Jeff Jampol said that earmarking proceeds for Narconon was a deal breaker.
"I am neither for nor against Narconon," Jampol said. "But the Doors could not support something as controversial as that."
But Ray Manzarek, the keyboardist who originally formed the Doors with Morrison, said he would be fine with the arrangement as long as the other half goes toward a proposed Doors charity for the homeless in Los Angeles.
Is a reunion in Clearwater in the offing?
"You never know," Manzarek said. "I'm hoping there will be a small performance myself."

Bid on history: The house Jim Morrison lived in during his time in Clearwater was just torn down to make way for condos. In an eBay auction in a few weeks, you can bid on pieces of the house.

Developers bulldozed the home at 314 N. Osceola Avenue in August. Jim Morrison lived here with his grandparents in 1961 and '52. His grandmother would put out milk and cookies when Jim had guests.
"It was very cute," says Tom Duncan of Clearwater. "He didn't give them as hard a time as his parents."

Phil Anderson outside the former home of Paul and Caroline Morrison. Behind him is the main entrance. Jim's room was around the other side, in back.

Jim had a separate entrance to his room at his grandparents' home. Says Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek: "When he left Florida, he left Florida for good, if you know what I mean. Florida was a little too conservative, a little too right wing for him."

"If Jim had too much to drink, I'd get him through this door and make sure he got into bed okay," says Phil Anderson, who says he would give Jim rides to St. Pete Junior College in his '55 Chevy. "There was a side of Jim people didn't know. He was a very intellegent guy who was always observing everything people were doing."

The separate entrance at the back of the house led to Jim's room, which friends say was piled high with books, save for the path to his bed.

The front room of the former home of Paul and Caroline Morrison, 314 N. Osceola Avenue in Clearwater. Their grandson lived with them while he attended St. Petersburg Junior College. The mirror was left by a former renter of the home.

Before bulldozing the home, developers salvaged what they thought they could auction on Ebay, including these knobs from the exterior door leading into Jim Morrison's room. The developer said the auction will be held in early 2006.

On August 15 workers demolished the former home of Paul and Caroline Morirson on the bluffs over Clearwater Harbor. Developers, who are building condo towers, say they will hang a plaque in the south tower to mark where Jim Morrison lived.

Buffalo Rising
BPO
Jan 18th 2008, 1:35pm By Eli George

Before you hit up Chippewa for the Saturday night bar crawl, you might want to consider stopping by Kleinhan’s Music Hall on February 2 to listen to the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO). It may seem like a strange way to start the usual Buffalo evening of drinking, drinking, and more drinking, but not when the BPO is rocking Kleinhan’s with the music of The Doors.
Brent Havens, a guest conductor, will be leading the BPO for this performance and is the Arranger/Guest Conductor for four symphonic rock concerts – the music of The Doors, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and The Eagles. A band will be reproducing as closely as possible the music of The Doors while Havens conducts the orchestra to produce a deeper, richer sound.
Randy Jackson, the lead singer to the rock band Zebra, will be singing the vocals to the songs. Jackson, whose band released a critically acclaimed self-titled debut album in 1983, has toured with the reunited Jefferson Airplane as a keyboardist and guitarist as well as being the lead singer to Zebra. Zebra just recently released their latest album, “Zebra IV”.
A side attraction to this already amazing event is the auction being held by the BPO and Operation Gang-Free Streets. The Triangle Development Company (TDC) donated a door to the organizations that came from Jim Morrison’s childhood home. The TDC of Clearwater, Florida bought the property and decided to create The Jim Morrison Home Series Legacy.
Instead of demolishing the home, they took out all of the doors and had them painted in different themes by a well-known Clearwater artist and then donated them to multiple organizations. The BPO and Operation Gang-Free Streets will be auctioning off the “Love Her Madly” door, which will be displayed at the concert by the artist himself. However, the auction will actually take place on eBay and the bidding will begin the day of the concert. An added bonus to the door – it includes a doorbell that plays snippets from the song “Love Her Madly”.
The performance will be a rocking tribute to Jim Morrison and The Doors, which (though it seems unlikely) if you have not heard of them, was a major influential band from the 70s. The BPO is advertising that this concert may be a sell out, so they advise getting your tickets early. To do so, call (716) 885-5000 or visit www.bpo.org for more information.

Morrison’s tunes open new doors for BPO

The painted door, dubbed “Love Her Madly,” was originally the master
bathroom door in a house at 314 N. Osceola Ave., Clearwater, once
owned by Morrison’s grandparents, Paul and Caroline Morrison.
Jim Morrison’s mother moved into her in-laws’ Clearwater house in 1944
with Jim, then 6 months old, while her husband served in the Pacific
during the final years of World War II. They lived there until 1947. A
teenage Jim Morrison moved back in with his grandparents after
graduating from high school, while he was attending St. Petersburg
Junior College.
When Triangle Development of Clearwater bought the house and
surrounding property to build a condo development, it salvaged from
the building 67 pieces, mainly doors, some with door frames, and
windows.
Several of the doors have been decorated with colorful portraits of
Morrison and images and lyrics from some of the band’s hit songs.
The Buffalo door is titled “Love her Madly,” and is painted with the
lyric, “... So sing a lonely song of a deep blue dream/Seven horses
seem to be on the mark ...” and a portrait of Morrison on a blue
background.
This is the first of the doors to leave the Tampa Bay area. Triangle
Development had already heard about the scheduled BPO concert, said
Meg Murphy, the director of marketing and public relations for the
company, but arrangements were made easier by the fact that her
sister, Teresa Reger, lives here.
Half of the money raised in the auction will go to the BPO. The other
half will benefit a new organization called Operation Gang Free
Streets, says Reger, who is president of the Buffalo Church of
Scientology and says she is active in local anticrime initiatives.
Operation Gang Free Streets plans to work in collaboration with what
Reger describes as a California organization of exgang leaders called
Cease Fire. Reger said the proceeds would be used to bring the former

While the painted door auction may be a highlight of the concert — it
will be unveiled onstage during the performance of “Love Her Madly,”
the song it references — the concert itself is expected to be a huge
draw.
“These concerts have done very well, historically,” said Baker. “A
couple years ago we presented the music of Led Zeppelin, and this year
the music of Pink Floyd, and this year the Doors. They all sold out,
and this concert is actually the bestselling of all three of those.”
Brent Havens, whom Baker called “the mastermind behind the arrangement
of the music” will conduct “a rock band with the BPO behind it.”
The concert is sold out, although some standing-room tickets may still
be available for $23.50."

Island View’s Rock & Roll Connection
2007-05-22 13:58:00
Triangle Development Company, builder of the Island View Condominiums in Downtown Clearwater, Florida, presents the Jim Morrison Home Legacy Series. This very limited series of specially commissioned paintings commemorating Jim Morrison of the Doors uses for its “canvas†authenticated doors taken from one of Morrison’s boyhood homes that was located on the current site of the Island View Condominium project. Carefully dismantling the home, Triangle Development preserved the doors and other artifacts to memorialize the late singer-songwriter while benefiting worthwhile charitable organizations both locally and internationally. The collection includes 67 pieces in all, mainly doors and windows, from the home of Paul and Caroline Morrison, Jim Morrison’s grandparents, formerly of 314 N. Osceola Avenue, Clearwater, Florida. Jim lived there as a baby from 1944 – 1947, and as a teenager from 1961 – 1963 while attending St. Petersburg Junior College.

Your own piece of music history

Operation Gang Free Streets plans to work in collaboration with what

will be unveiled onstage during the performance of “Love Her Madly,”
the song it references — the concert itself is expected to be a huge
