Its a shame....because the power of TD and SD....had that vibe. If COTL had been realeased IMO it would have been a shock and awe album...it could have made and broke The Doors. And from what i read in these past post..its true the record companies tend to dictate and ruin the creativity of a band. Ever notice why bands have two good records and then they go to shit...and the career is over. The song or evven the album (would have not been) is not complex it would have worked....they had 8 track recording which was huge at the time. I see why Jim resented the other Doors...poerty was his 1st love and this was his baby. If the album would have been completed....would Miami happened? Its hard to say im sure the Doors blame Jim for Miami....but the saying goes...don't screw with your lead singer or hell screw you over. COTL would have stood out with Hendrix Eletric Ladyland and the White Album as the classic records of 1968. Why TSP was a attempt to emulate The Beatles IDFK? Even the Stones tried to do it with TSMR...You know whats funny they tackled COTL in March 1968 a year later Miami happens. LMAO!

The Doors unhinged..Soft Parade cause & effect We discuss in this thread the effects of the period from the beginning of 1968 until the beginning of 1969 and Miami. Morrison also wanted to use poetry in between the tracks of WFTS and TSP some were recorded and ONE features on the newer version of TSP just before the title track. This was another dissapointment for him. The famous 1968 'I need a break' from Jim and the manzarek riposte of 'give it 6 more months' tells a story that is different to the one The Doors tell. Especially as when you factor in that 6 months later The Doors announced their biggest ever nationwide tour. Was Morrison involved in this? We don't know but it's not likely. And what was the first date? The rest is History.

Hi, new to the forum and had a question! My wife and I just recently purchased an vinyl album at a flea market. On the front of the cover is a picture of a lizard flashing its tongue. The title is "the celebration of the lizard". On the back side is a picture of the band walking through high grass it seems. It has a pink background looking like sunset colors and it has the songs on side one and two of the album. Side 1 contains Hello, I love you, Love Street, Not to touch the Earth, Summers almost gone, Wintertime love, and The unknown soldier. Side 2 contains Spanish caravan, My wild love, We could be so good together, Yes the river knows, and Five to one. I can not find anything on the internet. I can't find any of their vinyls that have this cover art and I don't know what to think of it. Any help or knowledge can you please email me and give me some kind of information as to what I'm holding. Thank you! Email: Kdawnporter@gmail.com

This is interesting. Don't know where it's from but it's obviously 1968 and talking about COTL. I can't imagine Jim would have been OK with fans naming his Magnum Opus but it did get the band some pre album publicity. Wonder what happened to the entries and if anyone won anything?"While Jim squats behind the control panel a roughly recorded dub of his 'Celebration Of The Lizard' comes over the loudspeakers. Gently almost apologetiaclly Ray tells Jim the thing does not work. Too diffuse, too mangy. Jim's face sinks beneath his scaly collar. Right then you can sense 'Celebration Of The Lizard' will never appear on record......certainly not on the new Doors album. There will be eleven driving songs and snatches of poetry read aloud. But no Lizard King. No monarch crowned with lovebeads and holding a phallic sceptre in his hands. 'Hey bring your notebook to my house tomorrow' Rothchild offers. 'Yeah' Jim answers with the look of a dog who's just been told he's missed his walk."The Shaman as Superstar by Richard Goldstein From the Waiting For The Sun songbook 1969.

February 19th is the usual date given for the start of the bands 3rd album but here we see the studio log for TTG studio signed by The Doors on January 24/25th. So the band was there nearly a month before we thought the sessions began. The were still there at the end of March before moving to Sunset Sound for the WFTS sessions. What music did they put down in TTG? Obviously COTL but what parts and how long? At $60 an hour they were not there to have a laugh so what work did they put down on tape. Must have been substantial at those rates. But all we have is the half decent bootleg track.

13th March 1968 the band are still trying to get COTL right
27th March 1968 by this time COTL will not appear on the bands 3rd LP. Various stories of how it was too diffuse but my own theory was they dumped it because there was no obvious 'hit' So Elektra and the band conspired to stop what would be a side and a half on an LP and hope this new version would spawn a #1. Which it did. Of course Jim Morrison was not in on this and genuinely hoped for a COTL album which the LA Times reported he was working hard to correct any faults. He was obviously disillusioned by this as his demeanour changed for WFTS which resulted in his bad rap, during this period, of drunkenness and tardiness. I don't blame him but Elektra got their hit.
