When the still sea conspires an armor And her sullen and aborted Currents breed tiny monsters True sailing is dead Awkward instant And the first animal is jettisoned Legs furiously pumping Their stiff green gallop And heads bob up Poise Delicate Pause Consent In mute nostril agony Carefully refined And sealed over
This is a remarkable Doors 'song' due to the fact it is the first Doors piece Jim Morrison ever wrote and even more remarkable because he wrote it during his time at Alexandria's George Washington high School.
Written after the ocean regions between 30° to 35° north and 30° to 35° south of the equator which tend to contain calm waters and light winds.
18th Century sailors whose ships relied on wind power would stall and fearful of running out of food and water, sailors would throw their horses and cattle overboard to save on the ships provisions.
Jim Morrison supposedly wrote the poem after seeing a paperback book cover showing horses being thrown off a ship.
It is believed that he first read this work to an audience in a Washington coffee house whilst still at GWH.
The chaotic sound effects were created by dropping coke bottles in a garbage can, beating coconut shells on a tile floor, and having people scream in the studio.

“Horse Latitudes” I wrote when I was in high school. I kept a lot of notebooks through high school and college, and then when I left school, for some dumb reason – maybe it was wise – I threw them all away…I wrote in those books night after night. But maybe if I’d never thrown them away I’d never have written anything original – because they were mainly accumulations of things that I’d read or heard, like quotes from books. I think if I’d never gotten rid of them I’d never be free."Jim Morrison – Los Angeles Jim Morrison: Genesis of a Poet The Doors LPJim Morrison Alexandria Virginia
