Dylan Poems, Hendrix Jewelry Set For Christie's Rock Auctions
(Monday October 10, 2005 05:01 PM)
NEW YORK (AFP) - Early poems written by Bob Dylan at college and a medallion worn by Jimi Hendrix during his pyrotechnic 1967 performance at the Monterey Pop Festival will go under the auctioneer's hammer in New York next month.
The sale of rock and pop memorabilia at Christie's will also feature a rare set of handwritten lyrics by The Doors frontman Jim Morrison and a Tom Tom drum used by former Beatle Paul McCartney in the late 1950s.
The Dylan lot dates from the music legend's brief 1959-60 stint at the University of Minnesota.
The 16 pages of hand-written poems -- most signed "Dylan" or "Dylanism" -- document the earliest known usage of his pseudonym, having changed his name from Robert Zimmerman.
"While some of the poems are rooted in his daily university life and reference his Jewish heritage with Yiddish phrases, the wit and irony pervasive in his later songwriting are already evident in this body of work," said Christie's, which estimated the values of the lot at between 60,000 and 80,000 dollars.
A rare 1961 recording made by Dylan at a friend's house in New York was expected to bring as much as 60,000 dollars.
The lots are being sold amid revived interest in Dylan memorabilia following publication of the singer's memoirs last year and the release last month of a critically acclaimed Dylan documentary directed by Martin Scorsese.
The Hendrix lot is a gilt metal medallion he wore during his famous set at Monterey when he set his guitar ablaze on the stage. The performance marked the US debut of Hendrix's band, The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
The owner of the medallion met Hendrix in a New York night club shortly after the festival and accompanied him on tour later that year. Christie's put a 60,000-80,000 dollar estimate on the item.
The Jim Morrison lyrics (40,000-60,000 dollars), written on both sides of The Doors stationary, are for the song "Not To Touch the Earth," and mark the first appearance of the late singer's alter-ego, The Lizard King.
The auction will be held in Christie's New York showroom on November 21.
