Sweet bird of prey you've gone below
All soft and black it's time to grow
Don't be afraid to touch the light
Don't run from love in the starless night
Hang on to your life it's begun now
Hang on paradise here we come now
Life is like the wind, where does it begin?
Time come again, where's your day now?
Bring me your sun, light the way now
Just spread your wings and taste the sky
It's time to laugh, it's time to fly
The mountain air is clear and bright
Your shadow world is endless night
Time come again, where's your day now?
Bring me your sun, light the way now
Hang on to your life it's begun now
Hang on paradise here we come now
Life is like the wind, where's it gonna end?
This is another very poignant song from Other Voices.
Perhaps Ray Manzarek admonishing Jim Morrison for not guarding his own with more care.
Opening with John Densmore trading jazz licks with master percussionist Francisco Aguabella and bassist Wolfgang Meltz before Ray joins with a mournful piano and Robby comes in with an instantly recognisable Doors guitar.
The music here is the strongest point of the song and a showcase for Densmore to remind us all how good he was in those heady days of the Morrison Doors.
Ray once again underlines his vocal ability as Screaming Ray Daniels displaying a good range of emotion from euphoria to out and out anger at the opportunity lost perhaps by his old band-mate who’s shadow world had indeed been endless night.
Ably supported by himself and Robby on harmony vocals this is one of the really strong songs to come out of the post Morrison era.
Climaxing with a maelstrom Doors whirling jazz jam between all the players building in power until a crescendo where Ray asks the simple question.
‘Life is like the wind, where's it gonna end?’
Many Doors fans dismissed the post Morrison era out of hand without troubling themselves to really listen to what was offered up.
Hang On To Your Life a good example of how that was their loss.
