Some great books on the market and some absolute rubbish......my fave is without doubt Rays effort. Who cares if Ray is a liar and lives in a fantasy land where he and Jim were forever best friends its as entertaining as hell and never boring.

I like Break On Through, I think it's still the best researched & (so far) definitive bio. I'd like to read Mike Jahn, but anywhere it's for sale it is expensive, wish I'd had the foresight to buy it in 68 but I was only 7 & bought Rasmus & the Vagabond, & the rest is as they say history

bought that in late 70 early 71 here on Teesside....my copy is pretty decent after 30 years xcept the glue is decomposing...that and 1974 Brit book Stumbling Into Neon are the only Doors rarities I have anymore..... Doors book just have an eye on a buck now Davis garbage a testimony yo that. I agree with you that BOT is probably the best researched and I would say Frank Lisciandros efforts to be among the top echelon. Maybe someone should email Mike and ask him to come here.... ;D There is an excerpt I transcribe a couple of years ago here on this section......I used it in my old Yahoo group. newdoorstalk.proboards43.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1103741755

I've enjoyed John's book ALOT. That guy is so hilarious how he tells things.... John and Rays books are of immense interest to Doors fans as they are the only record we have of life within The Doors circle. John is slightly whiney and far too honest......if I recall it was the first time we found out that he actually left the band and was replaced for a couple of Doors gigs with another drummer.....until he returned. But as you say John tells his story exceptionally well and with great humour as well as sadness and regret....a superb book. Ray tells a rather fairy tale story and embellishment is his forte.....he exaggerates his importance and diminishes Robby and John. For me its the most entertaining and enjoyable Doors book but not exactly the most truthful. I can't abide who R$ay has become...vain, selfish and greedy....but I still love the old Ray.....(I miss HIM a lot).... I described him when i first started discussing The Doors on the Net as The Doors 'engine room'....he was never really given the due credit for his part in the genesis of the band and for me the band would not have existed without Ray Manzarek.... Jim once pointed to Ray whilst in conversation with someone at a party and said ...' see that guy! He's The Doors'..... rare praise indeed and deserved beyond doubt....sadly Ray forgot all that. It would be nice to hear Robby's story before he gets to old and grumpy but I doubt we will! So many of those on the periphery of The Doors world it would be interesting to hear from as well.... For me we have come a long way since Mike Jahn wrote the first Doors book but we still have so much to learn.....I am 50 next year...I would like to know a lot more before I am worm-bait

Here is a nice link to "Follow the Music," the story of Elektra records as told by its founder, Jac Holzman. www.followthemusic.com/whobook.htmlExcellent tale of one of rocks true visionaries....he was astute enough to sign The Doors wasn't he?

I think Break On Through is the best as for being factual. I do like the other books as well, but BOT is the best one.

Guess I'll have to check Break on Through out, I thought No One Here... was exceptional, it made you feel like you knew him and grew up with him. It was after reading that book I started understanding Morrison and the Doors music a lot better.

The only books I didn't like were the book by Stephen Davis, Patricia Kennealy's book, and Linda Ashcroft's book.
All the others are great as far as I'm concerned. I loved John's and Ray's books. NOHGA is also good.

I Second That--i am still Reading LOL. When I read it, I couldn't believe the things that Stephen Davis said. I was like, this can't be true, so I got on The Doors message board and found out what a load of crap it really was. People like Stephen Davis make me sick!
