In 1999 both Channel 4 and BBC commissioned huge polls to determine who were the icons of the 20th Century. Part of the BBC poll was to find the musical Icon Of The Century and the smart money was on John Lennon but the spanner in the works was our bloke who absolutely danced the poll to finish top by a mile. see hereJim Morrison BBC Icon Of The Century Xmas 1999.
This was the magazine that gave the results of the channel 4 poll and our guys did well in this too. Of course it's a poll and polls are about whats popular at the time so plenty of nuggets in there as well but nice to see something that was carried out by major players in the UK return such favourable results for The Doors. This was in a section for departed stars in the magazine.

It's interesting how ROTS was voted in the top #75 songs yet LMF which had a long history in the UK charts mainly as covers by other artists did not. Of course LMF was never a hit for The Doors until 1991 when it gained popularity from the back of the Stone movie but it had been popularised by artists in the UK ranging from Jose Feliciano to Will Young with pretty much everybody else in between. HILY was a minor hit for The Doors in 1968 but never had the popularity other Doors songs had. Of course ROTS is part of the Doors Myth from when it was believed Morrison deliberately wrote the lyrics as a sign he was heading for cover by faking his death. I signed up for that in the early 70s as it had a power and resonance that seemed to give it veracity. Of course it was nonsense but by then The Doors were themselves fueling the Myth so fans and non fans alike trod many a weird road in the 70s and 80s that led them to a still living Jim Morrison.
