Definitely, but the drugs are certainly an aspect of Morrison's multi-faceted lyrics.

The point that Morrison's lyrics were so multi-faceted leads one to the conclusion that he would cleverly write a song to make the listener believe the song to be about a subject which it wasn't. He carried around with him a book on Ancient Myth which may or may not have had the story of the Celtic Crystal Boat in it. He was well read even from his teens so he possibly would have been aware of this kind of thing. It's like his comment that people seemed to see him as drugged up all the time. There is no doubt he used drugs but he used them for the same purpose his heroes used them. It's too easy to equate this song as about drugs. With Morrison it's always best to look beyond the obvious but sometimes that takes you away from what he meant the song to be about. The cleverest songwriters do this all the time. Morrison was a clever songwriter. Edith Hamilton's book on mythology, a book Jim carried around in the early days..... John Densmore.
