I havnt come in this bit to specifically slag Ray off, but I watched dance on fire last night with a beers. And I have always said this...Rays videos are crap! I know you probably have to give the man some credit as they were very early music videos i spose. but considering the guy studyed this stuff at Uni, you would think he could make a better job of the videos content and directing. A perfect example is how lame the LA Woman video. the cars driving around aint that bad, but what the fuck is with the shit hooker and murderer!? i know its based on motel murder and all that, but the acting is soooo lame. and the other annoying thing is the bloody flashing dantes neon sign on the hills during the lyrics hills are filled with fire. the other videos are lame aswell. anyone else got opinions on ray's esquisite directing talents?

What directing talents would they be Rick? Just spend 90 minutes watching Love Her madly and you will see that he has all the film directing skills of Sooty! Truly the worst film of the 21st (or any other) century.. Ray Sooty One a director the other a glove puppet.....which is which is anyones guess.... ;D LA Woman is so 'obvious' as is everything Ray does directing wise.....John Doe....the guy in the video is a good actor...he was excellent as Winonas dad in Great balls Of Fire.....and a half decent singer with X but Rays pedestrian direction would drag Larry Olivier down into the depths.....

The only originality I have seen in the Manzarek directored "Doors" videos stems from putting his own personal spin on a Doors song of his choosing, the usage of pre-existing film from "Feast Of Friends" and sampling of stock news footage that is all incorporated into Manzarek's short film L.A. Woman.
The L.A. Woman video in and of itself is Manzarek's own interpretation of what the song L.A. Woman means to him. He shows a Ford Mustang in the video that is clearly not a replica of GT500, he chooses to include a Japanese festival in Los Angeles which I don't understand unless he is paying tribute to his wife's ethnic background and/or to draw attention to his Buddist/Zen nature. He shows two actors recreating a scenerio in his head of the motel, money, murder, madness part of the song but misses the mark completely in this directorial feature. Seems the motel scene is an outtake of worship to his favorite actress Marlene Dietch seeing as how the actress playing the part has blonde hair and there is the moment where the camera fixes on Deitche's Hollywood Star for a few seconds.
I have come to the realization that if Manzarek was going to do something subtainal with his degree in film making he missed his opportunity years ago, if in fact any opportunity ever presented itself prior to 1987 when the Dance On Fire video came out.
Manzarek has literally confined himself into self-worshipping-fantasy to which he continues on to this day. I wouldn't waste my money or my time purchasing either the Love Her Madly or the supposedly up and coming Riders On The Storm movies.

interesting! the little yellow chap is ray isnt he? unfortunately any video I have seen directed by ray is at best amaturish (i know that has to be spelt wrong!) and if that chap in the la woman video was an accomplished actor, please note past tense 'was' lol poor bugger. so why is ray so shit at directing? he obvioulsy stuck through the course at uni knowing he had no natural flare or talent for the subject. I have to watch love her madly and the ROTS film, atleast just for a laugh....aaawww bless him lol
