As aptly put by rock ‘n' roll journalist extraordinaire Ben Fong-Torres, there's never been digital reissues of The Doors recordings that has sounded quite like these hybrid multichannel gems from Analogue Productions. Taking the original master analog sources, they have made the ultimate digital editions. As Fong-Torres notes: "Bottom line, a chronicle of The Doors in the studio, captured with the highest sonic quality possible, they deserve no less!"

The Doors exploded onto the music scene in 1967 with their epic debut, introducing the world to their unique blend of rock, blues, jazz and flamenco styles arranged around Morrison's deep, resonate voice and poetic lyrics. Their eponymous release is widely considered the band's masterwork and contains some of their most beloved songs, including "Break On Through (To The Other Side)," "Light My Fire," "Back Door Man" and "The End."

Although most of the material for their 1967 sophomore album was written around the same time as their debut which was released earlier in the same year, the songs on the genre-bending Strange Days still manage to possess their own distinct and foreboding character. The equally as impressive follow-up yielded the touchstone hits "Love Me Two Times" and "People Are Strange" as well as the the fan favorites "Moonlight Drive," "Strange Days" and "When The Music's Over."

With their third album, 1968's Waiting For The Sun, The Doors took a noticeably mellower turn, delivering some fine melodic ballad rock songs like "Hello, I Love You," "Love Street" and "Wintertime Love" while still retaining their former power with tracks like "The Unknown Soldier," "Spanish Caravan" and the apocalyptic "Five To One." The Doors' newfound sensibility not only helped the band produce one of their most diverse releases, it also resulted in their first and only #1 album.

The Doors mined new territory with their 1969 release, The Soft Parade, incorporating brass, strings and even a full orchestra into the mix, albeit with the same results as it became their fourth Top 10 album in a row. The album climbed all the way to #6 on the strength of the huge hit “Touch Me.”

Released in 1970 in the wake of Jim Morrison’s infamous indecency bust, the Doors next-to-last album Morrison Hotel found the band reinventing themselves as one of the greatest bar bands around with a thrilling bluesy, no-frills approach and harder edged sound. The album shot up to #4 on the charts on the strength of the now classics "Waiting For The Sun," "Roadhouse Blues" "Peace Frog" and "Ship Of Fools."

1971's L.A. Woman was The Doors sixth and final studio album, released just three months before Jim Morrison's death in Paris, France. It was also the first Doors album to not feature production from longtime collaborator Paul Rothchild. The rawer, more live feel marks a return to the blues roots from which the band originally emerged, delivering the signature songs “Love Her Madly,” “Riders On The Storm” and the title track.

All of The Doors' legendary albums — The untoppable self-titled 1967 debut The Doors, one of rock's most important debuts, Strange Days, Waiting For The Sun, The Soft Parade, Morrison Hotel, and the visceral L.A. Woman — have been remastered by Doug Sax and The Doors' original engineer Bruce Botnick, and the LPs pressed on 200-gram vinyl at Acoustic Sounds' own Quality Record Pressings plant (fast gaining popular consensus as the best pressing plant in the world).

But this special Doors' reissue features more than just spectacular sonics. We've included a 12-inch specially illustrated booklet with 19 photographs and a 2,700-word essay about the band from Ben Fong-Torres. Fong-Torres, a former editor for Rolling Stone, got the last interview with lead singer Jim Morrison before Morrison's departure in Paris in the spring of 1971, never to return.

Portions of that last interview with "lead lizard" Morrison also appear in the included booklet.

Fong-Torres helped compile one of the most definitive written histories of the band — "The Doors by The Doors." Technical notes about the recording process by Doors producer/engineer Bruce Botnick:



"Throughout the record history of the Doors, the goal between Paul Rothchild and myself was to be invisible, as the Doors were the songwriters and performers. Our duty was to capture them in the recorded medium without bringing attention to ourselves. Of course, the Doors were very successful, and Paul and I did receive some acclaim, which we did appreciate.

"If you listen to all the Doors albums, no attempt was made to create sounds that weren't generated by the Doors, except for the Moog Synthesizer on Strange Days, although that was played live in the mix by Jim, but that's another story. The equipment used was very basic, mostly tube consoles and microphones. Telefunken U47, Sony C37A, Shure 56. The echo used was from real acoustic echo chambers and EMT plate reverb units. In those days, we didn't have plug-ins or anything beyond an analogue eight-track machine. All the studios that we used, except for Elektra West, had three Altec Lansing 604E loudspeakers, as that was the standard in the industry, three-track. On EKS-74007, The Doors, we used four-track Ampex recorders and on the subsequent albums, 3M 56 eight-tracks. Dolby noise reduction units were used on two albums, Waiting For The Sun and The Soft Parade. Everything was analogue, digital was just a word. We didn't use fuzz tone or other units like that but created the sounds organically, i.e. the massive dual guitar solo on "When The Music's Over," which was created by feeding the output of one microphone preamp into another and adjusting the level to create the distortion. The tubes were glowing and lit up the control room.

"When mastering for the 45-RPM vinyl release, we were successfully able to bake the original master tapes and play them to cut the lacquer masters."

Only worth it if you have high end playback equipment (turntable or SACD player). Knowing the names that worked on this, I am sure that anyone who hears the digital or analog versions of this box set on a killer system will be blown away ...

But ... hey guys ... how about you do a definitive COMPACT DISC reissue for us regular folks? Something that is going to sound good on both a decent home rig and a car stereo. And how about including ALL the studio albums, and a separate disc (or two or three) to collect all the issued outtakes and odds and ends ... and ESPECIALLY all the single versions ... those tracks (the original mono and stereo single edits/mixes) really show off the original production team (Rothchild/Botnick)'s skill in making a record that would punch you in the gut, sonically, coming out of your (in the 60s, MONO) car radio.

But anyway, I digress ...

The trouble with this kind of thing is it goes to such a fine degree it loses the heart of what was intended in the first place.
I enjoyed the 40 year mixes and am not a Luddite when it comes to audiophilia but just because we can do something does not necessarily mean we should.

Far more important projects that should be undertaken.

But of course Jeff is an audiophile so he will love this kind of shit.

I forgot to mention, but did you see that in the UK iTunes Store, the 40th Anniversary mixes have been DELETED. You can buy all the original studio albums (including OV and FC) for a reasonable price individually, or as a bundle for a reasonable price as well (around £19.99). For £14.99 or thereabouts you can buy a "new" release entitled "Behind Closed Doors: The Rarities" - this includes all the bonus tracks from the 2007 CDs plus a ton of other odds and ends ... remixes, the Skrillex track (!), and sundry other things. A few of the BMR releases remain (Boot Yer Butt is gone), but they have added a new BMR digital "box set" collecting the rest of the BMR stuff since the Philly release (and, strangely, including Hollywood Bowl, which was a mass-market release). Anyway ... nice that this stuff is still available (mostly) in some format ... and glad to see the 2007 remixes deleted!
