Dark Angel from The Last Poets Land
Stuart Henderson chats with Darryl Read.
Hi Darryl, Could you please introduce yourself to the readers of TheDoors4Scorpywag!.
I was first introduced to the Scorpywag readers when Alex printed my poem: Last Poets Land. But - hi again everybody.
What led you to settle in Germany and how do you get on with the Doors fans there?.
I moved to a house in Germany five years ago, mainly because I liked the house and I have been doing quite a few concerts in Berlin, as has been the case,
on-and-off, since 1985.
The main DOORS fan I know here is Jochen Maassen, who has helped with the printing of some of my works; he also introduced me to other international DOORS fans, whom I seem to get on with just fine.
How do you feel now about FRESHLY DUG, Do you feel that it stands the test of time as a Poetry Album?.
I feel that if people keep buying it, which they are, then it must have some sort of timeless quality (as was the intension in the making of it).
In fact it is just up for it's third re-issue.
How Much did The Posthumous Jim Morrison Poetry album "An American Prayer" influence you in doing FRESHLY DUG?. -
None! (as an English poet I try to innovate my own scene), although I do love AAP, and all of Jims poetry.
You worked of course With Ray Manzarek on it, how are you and Ray getting on these days?. -
Very well, in fact we are good friends as well as being poetry cohorts from
time-to-time. I also visited Ray and Robby on three of their European gigs recently... which was a lot of fun.
What are your Thoughts On THE DOORS OF THE 21ST CENTURY?.
Great to see Ray and Robby do their stuff - live, and Ian Astbury seems like a nice cat.
Your Autobiography Came Out Last Year, how did you start work on that?.
With a large note book and a pilot BL-SG-7-L pen around 4 years ago.
What has the Response been so far to it?.
Heart warming.
Have you read Ray's book "Light My Fire" and if so what are your honest thoughts on it?.
I have read Light My Fire, and thought it was great! I like Ray's writing... he seems to be able to not waste a word or space of the paper.
What Did you think Jim's move to Paris In 1971, do you think it was a good move from a being creative Point Of View?.
I think it was an escape, and - fatal from all points of view.
What do you think made The Doors such a unique group?.
They're uniqueness.
What do think of Pere Lachaise and the Doors fans pilgrimages to Jim's Grave?.
I think that is great that the people can find time to celebrate a great Artist's such as Jim, and also celebrate their own existence in the now' at Pere Lachaise.
Was the poem "Last Poets Land" from Freshly Dug Inspired by Jim at all, what's the story behind that one?.
Jim inspired me as a poet, the same as Arthur Rimbaud and recently Keats, but, neither inspired my own work as a poet. What did embellish the work immensely was Ray's magic keyboard playing. ‘Last Poets Land’ is kind of cryptic, as is most of the work in SET, my poetry book. Some get it and some don't, but either way, I hope they are deeply entertaining for everyone who reads them.
“My pulse beats your heart life,
I am the dark angel,
and I come from the last poets land,
We have deep soul here,
We are winters angels.
Thirty birds shall call on you in deep dream,
Marsh gods will unfold scenes.
Come all that are right, across soil and sand,
I am the dark angel,
We are the last poets
from the summer lands.”
Have you met Any Of Jim's Parisian Pals such as Herve Muller and Gilles Yepremian, what's your views on these guys?.
I have had a couple of long drinks with Gilles Yepremian, and found him to be an amicable character.
Do you think Jim Belongs in the company of such people as Hemmingway,Rimbaud, Nietszche, Miller, Kerouac etc?.
Yes, and more so.
What Morrison Poem for you is the Most Profound?.
I don't know what this one is called but I like it:
Moment of inner freedom
when the mind is opened & the
infinite universe revealed
& the soul is left to wander
dazed & confus'd searching
here & there for teachers & friends.

What Doors Album for you stands out as the most literate?.
Waiting For The Sun
What is next for you regarding your poetry?.
I am currently compiling new works for a new poetry book and CD album.
Who are your Influences and how did they influence you?.
The (early) Who were my first influence, as I also grew up in their area and with their music. Townshend was a great story teller, and incredibly innovative.
Later (in 1980), my Japanese girlfriend at the time; turned me onto some of Jim's writings, and I became intensely interested in the DOORS, around a year later I met Ray.
With this being the end of the interview, what would you like to say to all the Doors fans that are reading Doors 4 Scorpywag?.
I like this site, and it's ambiguous cultured views.
The contributors seem to have a honest point of view.
