Darken My Fire : A Gothic Tribute To The Doors
This is a very mixed compilation, more likely to appeal to the goth market than serious Doors fans. In saying that, there are a few tracks on here that may appeal to Doors purists as an amusement. Tribute albums are, on the whole, usually disappointing. Here goes with a track by track assessment……………
LOVE ME TWO TIMES The Mission UK Goth fans will like this. The Mission have given this great track a classic 'Mission' sound, and made it their own.
LA WOMAN Eating Crow The rock 'n' roll sound and rasping vocal that made the original song great are sadly missing from this flat and soulless cover!
HELLO, I LOVE YOU The Newlydeads The Newlydeads sound remarkable like Alien Sex Fiend in this track! This could easily have been at home in 'The Batcave' in the early eighties (if you're old enough to remember first time around gothdom!) This is a great track, with the Newlydeads using a heavy guitar sound and punchy vocal that make this version much more upbeat than the original.
FIVE TO ONE Alien Sex Fiend ASF have done themselves no favours with this one! Ollie's voice would be more suited to selling goth memerobilia at Camden Market rather than murdering this perfectly good song!
LIGHT MY FIRE The Electric Hellfire Club This would make a great goth wedding march, with it's heavy organ and spinet sound, but the hypnotic sound of Ray Manzerek's organ on the original version cannot be matched here.
STRANGE DAYS Spahn Ranch This guy's vocal resembles Morrison's, on top of a Strangleresque back track. Not bad! Not bad at all!
RIDERS ON THE STORM Ex Voto This is great - a modern feel to a Doors classic. Still as dreamy, softened somewhat by the female vocal and orchestral backing. Would appeal to both Doors and goth fans, young and er……..not so young!
PEACE FROG Mephisto Waltz A catchy little number. The sound has hints of Fields of the Nephilim, but the vocal isn't quite deep and dark enough to make this sound very gothic. Nevertheless, worth a listen!
THE SPY Eerie Von The vocal on this could be Jim Morrison singling live from his coffin in the Pere la Chaise! It has that familiar but distant feel to it! This track has gothed up well!
END OF THE NIGHT Rheas Obsession A beautiful, haunting vocal which has an 'All About Eve' feel to it. Lovely.
WHEN THE MUSIC'S OVER Controlled Bleeding CB have done a straight cover here, very similar to the original. No bad thing really, as the other artists on the album have taken a different approach.
PEOPLE ARE STRANGE Nosferatu Nosferatu sound a bit like Bauhaus here with the guitar sounding a bit like Daniel Ash's. However, they have failed to capture the true emotions portrayed in the song.
THE END Rosetta Stone This has hints of the Apocolypse Now helicopter at the start! Emotionless vocal. Rosetta Stone should stick to what they're good at! This doesn't quite work.
