VH1 Storytellers was broadcast on November 22, 2000 to coincide with the release of the tribute album Stoned Immaculate: The Music Of The Doors
I heard the album before I saw the VH1 show which was recorded on my birthday 26th September 2000. I was quite critical of both album and show 20 years ago but have mellowed a bit with it. I still think that Ian Astbury was pathetic on both album and live and the likes of Perry Farrell not much better. Only Travis Meeks really impressed me and he was the only real highlight of both album and VH1 show.
I still think the band should have played as a 3 piece and sung the songs themselves but that would not have brought in the fans as very few rate Ray as a singer and Robby is pretty awful. So they were probably correct in bringing well known (mostly) singers but that did not mean they were any good.
The Storyteller aspect was pretty poor and regurgitating the same old crap Ray has been peddling since 1971 was a bit dull. Something no one had ever heard before would have made it interesting.
It was nice to see the lads together again but overall it was pretty ordinary.

The excellent Doors Collectors Magazine were in attendance and gave fans a report on what happened. The show was recorded on my 45th birthday and even though I did not think much of it, when VH1 in my area got round to showing it, as a live experience I would no doubt have quite enjoyed it. The question at the end became focus of a lot of fracturing of the fans. I would have loved to see this toured around the UK. But what ended up as a joke for 50% of Doors fans was not remotely any kind of tribute and was just a grift until Densmore put a stop to it
