The first Doors single was 'Break On Through/End Of The Night' in January of 1967 just after the album was released and the band signed off in August 1972 with 'Get Up And Dance/Tree Trunk' shortly before the final break up. Ignoring what is your fave Doors track and such what was your fave Doors single and Why? Is there one that has a special significance or one that made you realise these guys were more than your average rock outfit? Not counting reissues The Doors released 18 singles during thier all too short career.....which is the most worthwhile....YOU choose! This is the generally accepted singles discography of The Doors 1967-1972 although there were other releases by various countries which are not listed here.... 1967 January: Break On Through (To The Other Side)/End Of The Night US #106 1967 May: Alabama Song (Whisky Bar)/Take It As It Comes 1967 May: Light My Fire/The Crystal Ship US #1 1967 September: People Are Strange/Unhappy Girl US #12 1967 December: Love Me Two Times/ Moonlight Drive US #25
1968 March: The Unknown Soldier/ We Could Be So Good Together US #39 1968 June: Hello I Love You/Love Street US #1; UK #15 1968 December: Touch Me/Wild Child US #3
1969 March: Wishful Sinful/Who Scared You US #44 1969 June: Tell All The People/Easy Ride US #57
1970 March: Runnin' Blue/Do It US #64 1970 April: You Make Me Real/Roadhouse Blues/The Spy US #50 1970 July: Roadhouse Blues/Blue Sunday
1971 April: Love Her Madly/You Need Meat US #11 1971 June: Riders On The Storm/Changeling US #14 UK #22 1971 November: Tightrope Ride/Variety Is The Spice Of Life US #71
1972 May: Ships with Sails/In The Eye Of The Sun 1972 August: Get Up And Dance/Treetrunk The dates may vary due to the country they were released in and single releases of tracks such as Universal Mind in October 1970 (to promote Absolutely Live), Mosquito and Piano Bird which were release in late 1972 are not included in the list. Plenty of singles were reissued and rehashed by various countries under Elektras banner but this is a reasonably comprehensive list of the official Doors single releases in the time of thier existence as a band. 1972 August: Mosquito/It Slipped My Mind US #85 1972 November: The Piano Bird/Good Rockin' The Post Jim Singles newdoorstalk.proboards43.com/index.cgi?board=DiscusstheDoorscirca1971to1973&action=display&thread=1147266688

My all time fave is Wishful Sinful/Who Scared You which was the first time I realised Jim Morrison could actually sing and was not just another rocker.....also 'Who Scared You' has been a fave of mine for over 30 years and for me one of (if not THE) the most underrated Doors tracks ever recorded.... Cost me 10p when i first bought it on the orange Elektra label......wonder what its worth today......?

No, long tracks were not great for the singles market....ROTS was cut down to 3 minutes..... You Make Me Real was an oddity in the list...it was not a 3 track single it was released twice with two different B sides.....RHB on one and The Spy on the other.....my local rock pub juke box had the one with The Spy in the 70s..... Its probably that the first YMMR release had RHB on the B side and then they decided that RHB would make a good single so released YMMR with The Spy instead.... RHB was released as a single shortly after....

I was checking out the Guinness Book Of Hit Singles at the library last week and The Doors had very little success here in the UK. Light My Fire hit #7 in 1991 which was a damn good year for The Doors due to the movie. It only crawled to #49 in 1967 whilst hitting #1 in the US. I guess we were not ready for Jim's darker revolution in the Summer of Love. A bunch of single releases here never even charted until 1968s 'Hello I Love You' hit the heady heights of #15 and a spot on TOTP.......then nothing until after Jim's death when Riders made #22 after a false start......it re-entered in 1976 and made #33. The Other Voices and Full Circle singles bombed here although Tightrope ride made #71 and Mosquito #85 in the US Hot 100. The band obviously had good success in the US but many of the single releases were barely charted. Light My Fire #1, People Are Strange #12, Love Me 2 X #25, Hello I Love You #1, Touch Me #3, Love Her Madly #11, Riders #14. But considering the amount of singles The Doors released its amazing that they did not do a damn sight better chartwise.......

It seems that a lot of the vinyls are Japanese ones. Does it mean that many of the board's members are Japanese or just that many Japanese vinyls were released?

It seems that a lot of the vinyls are Japanese ones. Does it mean that many of the board's members are Japanese or just that many Japanese vinyls were released? I don't think we actually have a Japanese member reflect! The Japanese record market was the third or fourth biggest market in the world in the 70s (behind USA/UK and perhaps Australia which may have been 4th behind Japan) which is why so many singles were released in Japan like this. Japanese picture sleeves are sought after collectors items for many bands collectors as they had interesting B Sides and rare pictures on the sleeves.....bands like Led Zeppelin saw many a single release in Japan such as Stairway To Heaven....... The Doors were very popular in Japan during the 70s.....still today....and Jim used to have a Japanese pen friend during the late 60s who he wrote to and exchanged poetry with. I think it was a young girl and I remember he had arranged to meet her when The Doors toured Japan in March/April 1970.....which obviosly never happened..... Sadly we never heard anything from her after Jims death which is a shame as it would have been an interesting look into the Jim Morrison we did not know so well! I love this thread.. let me do some showin off here myself, justa little in my collection... Danno Feel free to 'show off' anytime Dan....some interesting stuff there..........I used to collect stuff in the 70s/80s and had a few pretty cool items back then. I had a lot of original Doors LPs and singles and some neat collectors stuff.....now the only rare stuff I have now are my Doors books and the odd album..... Cheers for those mate ;D

Thanks for the great answers!
It seems Japanese really like to explore music from all over the world from early on. I have seen many Japanese-only CDs of some (rather) obscure band. Didn't know their passion started from the Vinyl age.
And I didn't know Jim has a Japanese panpal. : ) That's probably the best way for a fan to be in contact with Jim. With no worry of becoming/being considered a groupie when you're a whole Ocean away!

What do you guys think about The Doors singles? Do you have a favourite one? Do you have one that makes you cringe?
Any views of any of the bands single output from 1967 onwards would be interesting.
