Its interesting how once Jim Morrison's influence was missing from The Doors that the bands lyrical style seemed to shoot off in wierd tangents. Ray became Yoda and Robby became 'Don Henley'...even John chipped in with a song....if you could call it that.. I always thought after Jim died that Ray became the strongest of the songwriters within the band and Robby, who had written so many cool Doors tunes, seemed to be lost without his mentor Jim to guide him and just became twee..... Ray went on to produce the most meaningful post Doors material and show that maybe back in 1965 if he had chipped in that fateful Venice Beach day maybe HE could have written the 'Light My Fire' not Robby... Any thoughts? In The Eye of The Sun by Ray In the eye of the sun, before the world had begun Taking it easy, I was having some fun Loafin' and a jokin', it was all energy No such thing as you and or me No time, pure mind In the eye of the sun, before the world had begun It had been a lot of work the last time around I needed a rest, a chance to just lie down Always on the go, no time to kill a lot of runnin' to and fro, hard workin' at the mill So it blew up, and I flew up into the eye of the sun before the world had begun
Variety Is The Spice of Life by Robby Well, variety is the spice of life, babe That's what the judge is gonna tell my wife She said, "Why'd you have to do it? Why you such a fool?" I can't resist to try something new' Well, the judge said, "Guilty in the first degree." I said, "Can I help it if I dig multiplicity?" All these pretty women with nothing to do C'mon and help me try to find something new. Well, you've gotta try ev'rything once You better take out some insurance You gotta try ev'rything once You better build up your endurance Well, variety is the spice of life That's what the judge is gonna tell my wife She said, "Why'd you have to do it? Why such a fool?" I can't resist to try something new
The Piano Bird by John A bird sings outside my piano Lark of sweet love singing low The more I play, the more he sings He lives right up there in the green trees
Singing to me melodies And in return I play for him I played him a song on my piano
Well I played real good And I played what I could And in return, he sang for me
He lives right out there in the tree Giving me his melodies A bird sings outside my piano
Check out lyrics to both post Doors albums here.....they are pretty dire I have to say... www.doors.ahoj.sk/lyrics/circle.htm#bird

I think you are being a tad harsh BC....who could ever forget 'The Peking King & The NY Queen'? And 'Mosquito' is possibly the most irritating and catchy Doors song ever written... No me moleste mosquito No me moleste mosquito No me moleste mosquito
Why don't you go home
No me moleste mosquito Let me eat my burrito
No me moleste mosquito Why don't you go home.
Sheer genius...an annoying insect and Mexican food all in one....Jim would have loved Robbys imagery there...

I quite like other voices (or is it full circle), some good songs. although i agrre with cowboy, the songs really dont sound anything like the doors. The spirit of them must have gone since jim died. in essence, for the doors the death of Jim was the death of rock! I do love the mosquito, its datf n i love it, certaibnly not doorsy though. I like golden scarab too.

All I have to say to you BC is.... I'm gonna hang on your neck just like a verdilac Take you for a ride in my Cadillac Well I tried and I tried but I can't make you understand Baby can't you see I'm more than just a man
If you don't bring my coffee in my favorite cup You're gonna make it necessary for me to conjure up
Spirits, spirits
I'm gonna hang on your neck just like a verdilac Take you for a ride in my Cadillac Well I tried and I tried but I can't make you understand Baby can't you see I'm more than just a man
If you don't bring my coffee in my favorite cup You're gonna make it necessary for me to conjure up
Spirits, spirits Spirits, spirits
Sheer brilliance Could easily have been an out-take from one of Morrisons notebooks...

Another pair of lyric materpieces from Mr K. Jim wrote many great songs on acid whilst sitting on Dennis Jacobs rooftop watching the sunset whereas Robby seems as if he was on crack cocaine and trapped in a toilet when he came out with this drivel..... It Slipped My Mind You know, it just done slipped my mind It just done slipped my mind It's just so hard to find It just done slipped my mind
I left my body somewhere down the line It's just so easy to lose track of time It just done slipped my mind It just done slipped my mind It wouldn't matter, but it's time to meditate.
You know, it just done slipped my mind My memory's unrefined They must have spiked my wine Because it just done slipped my mind
My mind and body are still out of tune I hope they run into each other real soon It just done slipped my mind It just done slipped my mind I wouldn't mind, but it's cold here on the moon It just done slipped my mind.
I'm Horny, I'm Stoned Well, I'm tired, I'm nervous, I'm bored, I'm stoned Don't you know life ain't so easy when you're on your own Well, I'm lonely, I'm ugly, I'm horny, I'm cold Don't you know life ain't so easy when you're on your own leavin' home Well, I got ripped off, wiped out, I got burned Don't you know life ain't so easy when you'r on your own I feel my mind is shaken out of place I look like a truck ran over my face The doctor says I'm not a hopeless case I really wanna join the human race
'It Slipped My Mind' is perhaps the worst song ever attributed to The Doors name. Robby used to be such a wonderful songsmith when Jim was around which proves my earlier point about Jim being Robbys muse...... Ships w/ Sails Well, you asked how much I love you Why do ships with sails love the wind? And will I be thinking of you will I ever pass this way again? I'll be returning some day Until then please don't ask me my direction Let my tracks be buried in the sea Cause to wander's my infection till the four winds bring you back to me Don't count your memories think of me as just a dream Just like this melody I sing
This is a better one from Ray.....one of the best post Jim Doors songs along with Tightrope Ride (which is the best by a country mile)

People who say OV doesnt sound like the doors are tonedef idiots who think that Jim WAS the doors. You could say "the vocals" arent the same. This is true. But the music was still there.
Other Voices was UNMISTAKABLY the doors from the first few bars. Half the songs sound like LA Woman leftovers... which they probably were.
I gotta say tho... Full Circle would be barely listenable if not for Robbies songs. Rays stuff was pretty overdone.. Female vocals... crazy horns. Robbies songs were still reasonably modest and more like OV.

Wow I was really harsh a year ago. I like FC alot more now.. altho I still maintain that Robbies songs were more consistant.

Robby & Ray are like Chalk & Cheese when it comes to songwriting.......I think Ray has a lot more in common with Jim when it comes to writing songs.....his are weird and full of strange imagery whilst Robby's are usually pretty 'poppy'. I like most of Robby's songs on the Post Jim albums and his stuff with The Butts Band was damn good but Ray is a better songwriter for me. It would have been interesting if he had actually contributed a song to a Doors album when Jim was alive...........

I remember when I first got Other Voices & Full Circle I wanted to to like them SO MUCH, I knew they'd be different than with Morrison, so I listened to them & tried to listen to them as if they were a new band, I played them a few times & they just never came together for me. Verdiliac is perhaps the worst song ever written.
Morrison WAS the creative center for these guys, he kept them on the edge creatively & challenged them to do their creative best. The proof of this is, Robby wrote some of the most the top 10 hits, Light My Fire, Touch Me, Love Her Madly, so where are post Morrison Robby hits today? Not one post 1971 hit.

Thats true...The Doors popularity even today all stems from Jim Morrison but that does not mean the other guys did not make good music and write decent songs after Jim died. Nothing these three have ever done has ever sold well unless they plastered Jim's face on it and called it a Doors album but Robby wrote some damn good songs after 1971 as did Ray......it's a pity they never continued after the 70s but we Doors fans hardly encouraged them to make music as every project they were involved with has been ignored sadly........... I guess Jim was too much of a millstone to shake off as his powerful prescence made it pretty much impossible for John, Ray and Robby to be anything other than 'of The Doors'......... I guess thats another thing that makes the group unique........

I guess the word I should have used is synergy. The 4 of them together as a group are better than as individuals. & it seems to me that Morrison provided that spark of genius that caused the others to reach for it too. I know that John, Ray & Robby are all extremly talented musicians but their post Morrison work (to me) seems flat & listless.
After Jim died it seems that The Doors dropped out of sight. It's always surprised me that none of them went on to be stellar producers. I know Ray worked a little with X. Or maybe they should pushed forward with another singer, maybe the shadow they can't escape is because they don't allow themselves to escape it? The Stones went on after Brian, Pink Floyd went on without Syd Barrett, Genesis went on to greater (popular) heights when Peter Gabriel left, so the death or leaving of a legendary or figure of genius in a band doesn't necessarily mean it's death toll.
