Well, the clock says it's time to close now
I guess I'd better go now
I'd really like to stay here all night
The cars crawl past all stuffed with eyes
Street lights share their hollow glow
Your brain seems bruised with numb surprise
Still one place to go
Still one place to go
Let me sleep all night in your soul kitchen
Warm my mind near your gentle stove
Turn me out and I'll wander baby
Stumblin' in the neon groves
Well, your fingers weave quick minarets
Speak in secret alphabets
I light another cigarette
Learn to forget, learn to forget
Learn to forget, learn to forget
Let me sleep all night in your soul kitchen
Warm my mind near your gentle stove
Turn me out and I'll wander baby
Stumblin' in the neon groves
Well the clock says it's time to close now
I know I have to go now
I really want to stay here
All night, all night, all night
When Jim Morrison was first working on his Doors project with Ray Manzarek he found Olivia's Ocean Park Diner to be a cheap and cheerful place to get a filling meal considering how he was generally lacking funds.
By all accounts when it came time for her to rid herself of her customers she was rather strict in the regime for them vacating the premises. Hence Jim Morrison's plea to be allowed to stay and find comfort in the warm diner rather than face the neon groves and the cars filled with staring eyes.
Jim Morrison sang both lead and harmony vocals overdubbed over each other. Robby Krieger played a rather odd out of synch guitar which gives the song it's weird feel.
They re-used the music for When The Music's Over a year later.
Apparently this record was on the Juke Box at the London Fog and The Doors nicked it's bass line for Soul Kitchen.
