Don't need none today
Master's gone away
His mind has gone astray
'Cause we don't need none today
Did you hear what I say?
Don't need none today
Gonna run a rainbow ragged
Ask the mountain men they've had it
City life's a real bad habit
All the boys are down on the farm
Gonna run a rainbow ragged
Ask the mountain men they've had it
City life's a real bad habit
C'mon along it won't do you no harm
We're goin' down on the farm
Don't need none today
Master's gone away
His mind has gone astray
'Cause we don't need none today
Did you hear what I say?
Don't need none today
Gonna run a rainbow ragged
Ask the mountain men they've had it
City life's a real bad habit
All the boys are down on the farm
Gonna run a rainbow
Gonna run a rainbow
Gonna run a rainbow
Gonna run a rainbow
Gonna run a rainbow ragged
Ask the mountain men they've had it
City life's a real bad habit

Of all the songs on Other Voices this one is one of the most interesting in that it was a song from the LA Woman period and Jim Morrison downright refused to have anything to do with.
It's easy to see why Morrison was not happy with the song but it works rather well with the Mark II Doors.
Another chance for Robby Krieger to show off his harp skills and also featuring the odd Emil Richards with his marimba, kickshaws and whimwhams, which translated meant anything he could tap a tune out of, as added percussion.
Jerry Scheff features on bass as this is essentially from the LA Woman session but tidied up a bit and with Ray and Robby handling vocals instead of Morrison.
The idea that some commentators have that Scheff was brought back to the OV session is silly and all three tracks Sheff features on are from the LAW sessions. Which in itself is interesting as I'm Horny I'm Stoned is also from that period and another song Morrison was not interested in.
Musically it is pretty good Manzarek provides a nice piano/organ driven lead juxtaposed with Scheff's excellent bass line and Krieger and Densmore offer fine support.
Although it has to be said it is also another example of the confusion that The Doors had with direction as it veers from pop to jazz to country and back again. Vocally Ray does a good job but Robby spoils the effect a bit with his weird Hills Have Eyes vocal in the middle. The chorus is quite fun and the mark II Doors did bring a sunnier side to the old Doors gloom but also lost a great deal of their lyrical and vocal power from the loss of Morrison.
Ray Manzarek cleared up the mystery of the kickshaws and whim whams featured in 'Down On The Farm' by Emil Richards.
"A Kickshaw or a whimwham is an archaic American term for little things clanking. Knick knacks...anything that makes a noise. Emil probably has the largest collection of them and he travels all over the world with them. He's a standard LA jazz figure around for quite a while. Played with Paul Horn. Most of the music you've heard in the big movies like 2001...all the weird sounds are probably him!"

What direction do YOU think the band would have gone in if they had carried on after Full Circle?
What could have the doors become?
Should the band have carried on at all without Jim Morrison in 1971?
35 Years On....should The Doors have carried on?
Could an effective Doors replacement have been found for Jim Morrison in 1972/73?
Could Jim have been replaced in 1972?
What has been the best Post Jim Doors moment for YOU in the last 35 years?
