A lot of Doors fans don't like Rays voice much and complain that he spoils the songs such as Moonlight Drive with his lyrical backing to Jim's vocals (such as the early 1967 bootlegs show) but I liked what he did in the early Doors gigs....obviously once Morrison became supremely confident on stage there was no reason for Ray to sing anything but for me his contribution is always underrated in The Doors story. Ray was a seasoned stage veteran long before The Doors having been playing in groups for many years and rare tapes like the 1961 Lighthouse club show how competent he was as a leader on stage. So listening to his solo work was cool for me. The Rick and The Ravens singles show that Ray was a more than competent blues singer and The Matrix tapes show he was an integral part of the Doors live sets in thier earliest days. Always there to fill in when Jim did not show for an early set or to give the singer a beer break and most famously carrying off the entire set in Amsterdam after Jim decided to check out the local hospital. For me Ray's vocal ability was as much a Doors strength as Robby's writing talent and helped make the band so unique. 1966/67/68 were The Doors hayday and Ray Manzarek's vocals were an important part of that period..... I vote.... Screamin' Ray Rocks! What do you guys think?

i think he is best in a supporting role more. I aint over impressed by ray's voice, but that said. i love a lot of his songs - ships w sails and a lot from golden scarab etc and he is great in a supporting role. i suppose some songs he suits more than others, its a tricky one to be honest. some songs i here him singing with the doors i think, shut up ray, leave it to jim. but others he sounds great!

He got better with time. Close To You. you need meat.. even some OV stuff hes a bit crappy and plain sounding... but FC onward he gets more confident and actually has a technique... utilizing vibrato and different tambres in his voice.
