University of Michigan Men's Gym, Ann Arbor MI October 20th 1967
The Doors performed at the University of Michigan homecoming dance on October 20, 1967. Jim Morrison got exceptionally drunk on the way to the concert and was unable to perform when it was time for the band to take the stage. The other members of the band began playing “Soul Kitchen” without Morrison but eventually halted the song and decided to wait until he had sobered up. When Morrison finally came onstage, he sang in a high-pitched voice and insulted the audience. Robby Krieger and John Densmore eventually left the stage in frustration Ray Manzarek attempted to keep the show going by playing some blues riffs on Robby Krieger’s guitar. Many attendees walked out at this point and the show was halted again. On the band’s third attempt, Morrison finally sobered up enough to perform the rest of the show for the remaining crowd. A young Jim Osterberg (AKA Iggy Pop) was in the crowd that night and cites this show as a major influence on his performance style.
##According to Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger, this was the first Doors concert where Morrison’s drinking started to become a serious problem for the band.##
THAT is so much bullshit. The Action House weekend in Long Beach New York June 16-17th was a complete disaster as Jim got so drunk on Jack Daniels (possibly 30 shots) that first night and he tried to strip off due to the excessive heat
and the show was curtailed.
The next night he was so drunk he put the microphone in his mouth and made warbling sounds before the band led him off stage.
This show has gone down in Doors History as the shortest ever show they played.
So if they thought that was OK and waited till October to realise their singer drank too much then they weren't paying attention.
Rare photo of Ray playing Robbie's Gibson SG.
Doesn't look like John at the drumkit. The photo further down shows him wearing a light coloured jacket. This guy looke like he's wearing a suit & tie.
