DOORS OPEN UP
FREAK OUT, USA
February 1967 No. 2
LET’S OPEN THE DOORS
One of the best and strongest of the new sound groups, The Doors have a thing that’s all their own. To open up to a new experience. Come inside? And meet them.
What happens when you open up the Doors? You find Jim, Ray, Robby and John! And a more unlikely group of super stars you’ll ever find. With the exception of Ray Manzaek, all of the Doors are from Los Angeles – the mecca of love groups. But the Doors are not a love group – far from it. Jim Morrison, lead singer, feels that chaos, revolt and disorder are the road toward freedom – hardly loving at all!
The rest of the Doors? – Robby Krieger (real name Robert Alan Krieger) started playing the guitar at 17 – and took flamenco lessons, which may account for the wild way he grooves with that guitar on stage.
John Densmore is the drummer for the Doors, a native Californian, he’s been at the drums for 6 years. Before that, he played piano – guess he had to beat something! Would you believe he played symphonic ( that means long hair, kids – and not the kind on top of your head!) music in high school?
Ray Manzarek grew up in Chicago and left for L.A. when he was “older. “He’s 25 now – very old. Like John, Ray also played the piano, and like most kids, he hated it in the beginning, and then it became fun. He turned to jazz, blues and finally, rock.
Jim Morrison sings lead, feels that the image the Doors suggest is that of an invitation to the West – “A new, wild west…..strange and haunting, the path of the sun…..” Sunsets, night, the sea, the meaning of the Pacific as the end of the Zodiac, and the world with a bit of sensuous evil thrown in.
Jim was born in Melbourne, Florida, and went to school there, right up until attending UCLA film school, where he met Ray Manzarek and the Doors bgean.
It’s no secret how many doors have been opened by the fabulous and unusual sound of The Doors. They’ve been pulling in raves from everyone who hears “People Are Strange,” “Light My Fire,” and the first Doors album. And now, all Doors fans have something else to rave about – a new album, Strange Days. Meanwhile, “Light My Fire” and the first album have been certified million sellers by Billboard magazine. It’s a sure bet that “People…..” and the new album will follow closely in their footsteps.
If people are strange, then the Doors are the strangest of all! Unlike so many of their contemporaries from the coast, the Doors don’t live in a tribe, or practice extreme togetherness. They’re close professionally, as you can tell by their performance, but when they come to town, each goes his own way – until they’re on stage, and then they become a tight, beautiful group, each one contributing his individual part to produce a truly remarkable sound. Their music is obviously the strongest tie between with and with artists, that’s exactly how it should be.
If you’ve been lucky enough to attend a Doors concert, or have seen them on TV, maybe you’ve noticed that they don’t say much – no long introductions to songs, not even a personal introduction. They don’t extend themselves to please an audience in the usual sugary, entertainer way, They just want to get up there and do their thing – their best – and know that will please you.
You’ll never see a Door on stage in a conventional suit and tie. In fact, clinging black leather pants and jacket have come to be a trademark – the very special armor that contains Jim Morrison. Why sinister black leather? Because that’s Jim Morrison – mysterious, unreachable. Something about his look compels you and forbids you at the same time. But Jim Morrison will reach you – with his voice, with his soul, like no other singer can – and you’ll never quite get over the way he can turn you on…..END
