Blondie's New Hit?
Blondie vs. The Doors - Rapture Riders
Music nerds love to play the "What if" game: "Oh. My. God. What if Gwen Stefani re-recorded the Motels' "Suddenly Last Summer"? Or "What if Eminem sampled "Brass in Pocket?" "What if Jim Morrison and Debbie Harry rapped together?"
No, that music nerd is not stoned. In fact, Mark Vidler of Go Home Productions had an idea so compelling that he not only got the blessing of both Blondie and the Doors, but the song is currently a hit in Britain and now "Rapture Riders" -- which mashes the Doors' "Riders on the Storm" with Blondie's "Rapture" -- is this week's No. 1 Billboard Breakout, the most added single on the Billboard top 50 Hot Dance Club Play Chart.
So how did he come up with the idea?
"It was one of those inspirational 'shower' moments," Vidler told PlanetOut. "Whilst enjoying a good 'soaking' and listening to the radio in the bathroom, Blondie's 'Rapture' came on and I just could help but start singing 'Riders On The Storm' out loud over certain parts. I proceeded to piece this mad combination together in the studio upstairs. To my complete amazement, both tracks were in the same key."
The song appears as a bonus track on the upcoming "Blondie: Greatest Hits -- Sound & Vision," a new greatest-hits CD/DVD package that contains twenty audio tracks and sixteen video clips. The CD hits stores March 7 (the band is also scheduled to tour this summer), but you can take a listen to "Rapture Riders" in its entirety right now.

Then tune back to PlanetOut on March 14 for a surprise Blondie announcement and our upcoming interview with Debbie Harry!
