Career-spanning Doors Box Set Due Soon
A new, major box set from the Doors is on the way. It's called Perception, and the 12-disc package will include all six Doors albums released during Jim Morrison's lifetime, each of which has been expanded with rare and unreleased material. In addition to the six CDs, Perception will also come with six DVDs that feature the albums remixed in 5.1 Surround Sound, some bonus audio tracks, a photo gallery, lyrics, and two music videos from each album. Despite their personal and professional differences over the years, guitarist Robby Krieger, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, and drummer John Densmore worked together on the box set. Perception is due November 21st.
Manzarek told us that the era the Doors recorded in played a big role in their songwriting: "There was a war in Vietnam and, you know, that had to be stopped, and we were gonna try to clean up the environment, and do all those good things that hippies were trying to do. And everyone was angry, man, so, you know, we tried to make the music as hard and as powerful and as exciting as possible. And when you got Jim Morrison as your lead singer, well, you know, that's an extra plus. So that's what it was all about."
The cover of the box set is a door that opens onto the discs, and there's also a peephole that has Doors images and imagery on a rotating wheel.
The box set's name -- Perception -- is part of the Doors legend. Jim Morrison was inspired to name the band the Doors after reading the Aldous Huxley book The Doors Of Perception, which details Huxley's use of psychedelic drugs. Huxley got the title from the 18th century poet William Blake, who wrote, "If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite."
Bonus material includes:
The Doors -- two versions of "Moonlight Drive"; a version of "Indian Summer" that's never been released; a video for "Break On Through (To The Other Side)"; and a Canadian TV broadcast of "The End" from 1967.
Strange Days -- unreleased versions of "People Are Strange" and "Love Me Two Times," along with live footage of "Love Me Two Times" and "When The Music's Over."
Waiting For The Sun -- alternate versions of "Not To Touch The Earth," along with the classical piece "Adagio In G Minor" and the 17-minute-long "Celebration Of The Lizard," and video of "Spanish Caravan" and "The Unknown Soldier."
The Soft Parade -- an unreleased run-through of "Touch Me," the unheard song "Push Push," and alternate versions of "Whiskey, Mystics And Men" and "Who Scared You," as well as footage of "The Soft Parade" and "Tell All The People."
Morrison Hotel -- eight unreleased takes of "Roadhouse Blues," never-before-heard versions of "Peace Frog," "The Spy," "Money Beats Soul," and the Chuck Berry classic "Carol," plus videos of "Roadhouse Blues" and "Wild Child."
L.A. Woman -- the songs "Orange County Suite" and "(You Need Meat) Don't Go No Further" appear as additional audio, as well as footage of "The Changeling" and "Crawling King Snake."
