I'm surprised that Norman O. Brown's 'Life Against Death' has not been discussed here. I think it was a very important book as regards Jim's intellectual and artistic development. He seemed to follow up the cues that Brown gives in his work right up to his last days in Paris.
Anyone here read Brown?
I would say that to understand Jim you would need to read Brown.
