JURORS HEAR MORRISON TAPE, BUT NO CALL TO JOIN IN NUDITY
By: Paul Levine, Herald Staff Writer
Singer Jim Morrison, eyes closed and flaming pimiento red shirt red shirt unbuttoned at the top nodded his head in time to the music.
His lawyers, more sedately attired in grey suits, tapped their toes to the gut-tightening beat.
AND THE jurors, sober faces intact as throughout the trial, sat impassively and listened to Morrison’s voice plead, “Come on baby, Light My Fire.”
The Morrison composed theme song of the Doors was part of a 65 minute tape recording introduced into evidence by Prosecutor Terry Mc Williams. Morrison is charged with more or less lighting his own fire March 1 1969, in the rock group’s appearance at Dinner Key Auditorium. The state contends he exposed his private parts and has charged him with lewd and lascivious behavior, indecent exposure, drunkenness and profanity.
Missing from the recording was the question Morrison asked the audience before state witnesses say he dropped his pants and exposed his genitals. Kathleen Vivian, an attractive Miami police dispatcher, maintained she heard Morrison ask the 12,000 fans if they wanted to see his private parts, but said she did not see him expose himself. Other witnesses have testified they saw Morrison’s exposed genitals.
THE TAPE recording made by one of the young persons in the audience was turned into the Miami police last year after pleas in the news media for photographs and recordings made at the concert.
Though some of it was garbled, the tape was clearly audible when the music stopped and Morrison spoke:
“Hey, I don’t want a revolution,” he said. “I want you to love your neighbor until it hurts. I want love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love grab your f___friend and love him.”
The music Thursday marked Morrison’s last appearance in the courtroom until next Wednesday. Today the Doors leave for a giant rock fest on the Isle Of Wight, off the coast of England. The group is headlining one night of the three day festival which also features Jimi Hendrix and Joan Baez.
The state of Florida is expected to rest its case next week.
END.
