July 04, 2011
Yesterday (July 3) marked the 40th anniversary of the early death of The Doors' Jim Morrison and music fans across the globe are paying tribute to the legendary singer.
To celebrate one of music's finest, Gigwise has rounded up a selection of artists that Morrison inspired throughout his career and continues to influence after his death.
From Iggy Pop and The Strokes through to electronic offerings such as Massive Attack and Fatboy Slim, this is a look at the impact of Morrison's songs and legacy on the music world.
This list is a must see.
1. Pearl Jam – In 1993 The Doors were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Pearl Jam vocalist Eddie Vedder filled in for the late Jim Morrison and joined remaining band members Robby Krieger, Ray Manzarek, and John Densmore in LA for a three song set.
2. Creed – Following on from Eddie Vedder, Creed's vocalist Scott Stapp also contributed his vocals when performing alongside The Doors for 'Light My Fire', 'Riders on the Storm' and 'Roadhouse Blues' on VH1 Storytellers in 2000. Creed also performed their version of 'Roadhouse Blues' with Robbie Krieger for the 1999 Woodstock Festival.
3. Fatboy Slim – Norman Cook sampled Morrison reading 'Bird Of Prey', taken from The Doors' album 'An American Prayer', on Fatboy Slim's 2000 track 'Sunset (Bird Of Prey)'.
4. Iggy Pop – After seeing The Doors perform at the University of Michigan in 1967, Iggy was stunned by the onstage antics of Jim Morrison and continued to admire him during his career. Iggy was also suggested as a replacement vocalist after Morrison's death, which never occured.
5. Jane's Addiction – Perry Farrell was another 90s vocalist to pay tribute to Morrison by contributing vocals for The Doors in 2009. Jane's Addiction also released 'L.A. Woman' as part of their 'L.A. Medley' which also contained the songs 'Nausea' by X and 'Lexicon Devil by Germs.
6. Nirvana – The band performed a section of The Doors' 1967 track 'The End' as part of a medley that they performed live at Reading in 1991, alongside their own track 'Blew'.
7. Massive Attack – The duo put their own electronic spin on The Doors' 1966 classic 'Light My Fire' in 2002. The original song has also proved to be a popular cover song with Shirley Bassey, Beastie Boys and Will Young.
8. Soundgarden – Their 1996 hit single 'Waiting For The Sun' was the band's way of paying tribute to The Doors' legacy, whose original version in 1970 was taken from their fifth album 'Morrison Hotel'.
9. The Cure – The Cure recorded their cover of The Doors' number 1 single 'Hello I Love You' for the compilation 'Rubaiyat' in 1990, and performed 'Hello I Love You' live on Jonathan Ross' chat show in 1991.
10. The Strokes – The Strokes, and particularly Julian Casablancas, have said that they have all been influenced by Jim Morrison and The Doors, with particular emphasis shown on 'On The Other Side', a title that heavily references The Doors' original track 'Break On Through (To The Other Side)'.
