for months leading up to the release of the "Perception" box set in late 2006, this was a much anticipated product for it was said to feature new remixes of all 6 Doors studio albums with Jim... and so it did... besides the albums' 1999 remasters there were 6 DVD Audio discs (an oddity in its own right) that indeed brought new life and light to the legendary Doors repertoire...
we ripped the music off the DVDs and into regular CD/WAV/MP3 formats... listening carefully it was wonderful to make out the differences between the original and the new masters, many alterations were instantly justified, others loathed...
okay so far, this was a cool addition to our Doors collections; the remixes being the reason to grab a hold of 'Perception'....
until... and here we go... until it was decided upon to make the new remixes the new standard, in other words: people who buy a Doors CD nowadays are not listening to the music the way it has been for a good 40 years... what they get instead is Bruce Botnick's & Ray/Robby/John's new take on songs well known and much loved in their original conception for over 4 decades... to delete the original masters from the commonly available catalogue and to replace them with these new versions, to me is a huge mistake...
again, a fine piece of work, those remixes... as an addition to the original work, as alternate takes on the albums, but nothing beyond... what they could or even should have done is to release all 6 as 2CD sets... one disc the latest remaster of the vintage stuff, the other the 40th Anniversary remake including the bonus material... alas...
