I love An American Prayer. I prefer spoken poetry to reading it dry. I love listening to Jim's voice. It is so calming and beautiful even when he is reading poetry.

I second that--it sure does:)!! I don't think the album would be as good without the background music. Don't get me wrong, I love the sound of Jim's voice, but it wouldn't be the same without the music.

Jim was looking to record a poetry album and to that end was working with people like Jac Holzman and John Haeny in the hope of seeing it come out on Elektra. One of the criteria Jim was seeking on the album was NO DOORS on it. Whilst I really love American Prayer and think the lads did a superb job adding a musical backing to Jims words I find the Doorsless bootleg album far more satisfying. 'Lost Paris Tapes' and 'Rock Is Dead' feature the March 1969 session from either Sunset Sound Studios or Elektra new recording suite (nobody is quite sure which was used) and show the direction Morrison favoured. By no means anywhere near a finished work and the December 1970 session was similarly a means of testing the waters rather than a finished product but it can be gleaned from this that Jim was looking for a spoken word album with perhaps a touch of orchestra or maybe just a few sound effects. There may well be more along these lines but as yet they have not surfaced. I would venture to say that Jim would have been interested in 'Amercian Prayer' but its not what he envisaged when he set out to make an album of his poetry...

But, unfortunately he died before he could see this project through.

I love the american prayer album. its great to hear the poetry spoken by jim himself, adds great depth to it rather than simply reading it. its coming from the mouth of the guy who wrote it and you can hear his emotions etc. my fave parts have to be (cant remember the names of the sections) god makes angels of us all and gives us wings where we had shoulders smooth as raven's claws etc...superb!

Yeah, that makes sense. Hearing it live is great because you can hear the emotion in his voice and, as you said, sink your teeth into it. I haven't heard the Paris tapes.

apparently the structure and format of american prayer is not as it was read and intended by jim it was supposedly rehashed and edited by the rest of the band into what they thought was suitable for their album..... paul rothchild did not think a lot of it and was of the opinion that morrison would not have either.....
one way or the other, I personally do like it and it is cool to hear morrison,s words spoken by the man himself......
Words dissemble Words be quick Words resemble walking sticks
Plant them They will grow Watch them waver so
I'll always be a word-man Better than a birdman.................

I think the album is beautifully done. I remember reading that Paul Rothchild later apologized to the other guys about what he said earlier about it being a rape of Jim Morrison. I wonder if this after it won the Grammy in '78?

Oh, I thought it won the Grammy. It should have! Yeah bummer that Dance. It was a unique album in 1978 and should have been recognised but they probably gave it to an album of Toni Basil reading Marcel Prousts 'Remembrance of Things Past'....those awards things are all bullshit....some idiot has just nominated Bob Geldof for his 'outstanding' contribution to music? ? Thats a fucking laff....he may well have helped with the worthy Live Aid but musically he was crap......
