Attention, bibliophiles: The world's largest rare book fair is about to get under way in San Francisco again, and among the dandy items that will be up for sale is one of only 100 copies of a book of his own poetry that Jim Morrison of the Doors had privately printed. That's got a $12,500 price tag dangling from it, but it will be far from the most expensive item on display as the 42nd annual California International Antiquarian Book Fair opens at 4 p.m. Feb. 13 in the Concourse Exhibition Center.
There is also a collection of 18 handwritten manuscript fragments from Marcel Proust, including substantial but unpublished passages from "Remembrance of Things Past," on sale for $125,000; and a beautifully illustrated copy of "The Book of Hours" from the 15th century priced at $375,000.
More than 240 rare book dealers from around the world convene to display their wares at the three-day event, sponsored by the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers.
In addition to the exhibits, there are several seminars planned, including Alameda bookseller Vic Zoschak's primer for beginners, Book Collecting 101, at noon on Feb. 15. If you have any books you think might be worth something, bring up to three volumes for the Discovery Day session at 1:30 p.m. for an on-the-spot appraisal, first come, first served.
The fair hours are 4 to 9 p.m. Feb. 13, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Feb. 14 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 15. Tickets are $15 for three-day admission, or $10 for Saturday or Sunday, available at the door. The Concourse Exhibition Center is at 635 Eighth St. in San Francisco. Call 415-962-2500 or visit www.sfbookfair.com.
