Jim Clearwater Arrest sheet 1970This police report has never been made public, though not for lack of trying. Wayne Shelor, the Clearwater Police Department spokesman, happens to be a huge Jim Morrison fan. A 50-year-old former keyboardist, Shelor remembers his first band playing Light My Fire poolside at a Clearwater YMCA party. More than 20 years ago, working as a reporter for the Clearwater Sun, Shelor asked police if they had ever arrested Morrison. They said they could find no record. Turns out, there was one, filed under the name of a friend arrested with Morrison. Searching under "Darryl Arthur Hill," Shelor found the report, dated three days after Morrison's conviction in Miami for indecent exposure. It happened on Pier 60 on Clearwater Beach, near where he and Mary Werbelow first met. The clerk at the Fishing Stand bait shop called to report two guys "acting disorderly." Clearwater police arrested Morrison and Hill for "public drunk," and noted that more than a dozen "hippie type subjects" started harassing the clerk. Morrison and Hill spent about six hours in jail, paid $26 fines and hit the road. From St Petersberg Times. September 2005
