This is the release of the alternate takes and studio chatter which will come in various formats of LAW so I decided to give The Workshop Sessions a separate thread from the controversy of the LAW 40 year release. Anyone got a view on this feel free to chip in. Got to admit that The Workshop Sessions is quite awesome with the obvious exception of 'She Smells Like Shit' which really stinks a good disc out. I don't think these takes are the same as the vinyl release which is nice. A really storming version of The Changeling is fantastic and believe it or not probably better than the LP version. ROTS is really good and it is nice to hear the chatter between the band themselves and the engineer Bruce Botnick during some of the takes. LHM is nice and the version of LAW excellent. CHBMW is a real laid back version that I like a lot. Texas Radio is great and very different to the LP. BDSL is another storming version and damn good. She Smells So Nice sucks shit big time but its only a daft jam and NOT an undiscovered song like it was portrayed by that idiot Jampol. Rock Me is a decent bit of blues from the band. She Sucks Shit aside this is one helluva nice release Makes me wonder if the 3 CD release that was will have a few surprises on it as well if it ever sees the light of day in some format. There is no doubt that the mechanics of the release are utterly a joke but as usual the music makes all the shit these idiots cause worth it in the end. Did not expect to say this but I will indeed listen to this alternate LAW often indeed.

The LP version got in a bit of a mess when they found they could not etch the disc with a decent image so that is up in the air at present. 40th Anniversary 180g Vinyl Double LP Mastered at Bernie Grundman Mastering & Pressed at RTI! Fourth Side With 3D Effect Etched Art!
Rhino continues to give The Doors their due with this special 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of L.A. Woman. This two-disc collection contains rare and previously unreleased session outtakes and studio dialogue.
Recorded mostly live in their rehearsal space, the 10-song album was produced by the band with longtime engineer Bruce Botnick, who created a comfortable vibe in the studio. In an interview with Modern Drummer, Densmore recalled the L.A. Woman sessions. “We just did a couple takes, on everything. There were some mistakes, and I would say, ‘Ray, remember on Miles Davis Live At Carnegie Hall, on the intro of ‘So What’ there’s this horrible trumpet error? Miles said he didn’t care, because of the feeling.’ That’s what L.A. Woman is. Just passion — in our rehearsal room, not in a fancy studio. It was the first punk album!...”
Features: • 180g Vinyl • Gatefold jacket • Double LP - 3 Sides of music • Side 4 Contains no music but features a 3D Effect laser etched double image of the "Electric Crucified Woman" by Carl Cossic from the original album • Mastered by Bruce Botnick, Bernie Grundman and Jac Holzman • Pressed at RTI
Selections: LP 1 Side 1 1. The Changeling 2. Love Her Madly 3. Cars Hiss By My Window 4. L.A. Woman Side 2 5. The Wasp (Texas Radio and the Bi 6. Been Down So Long 7. Riders On the Storm LP 2 Side 3 1. She Smells So Nice / Rock Me Side 4 - No music - 3D Effect laser etched double image of "Electric Crucified Woman" by Carl Cossic from the original albumPart of this also came with the LAW singles box. The iTune/Amazon bonus tracks are pretty good too.
Stand out is the 8 minute very different L.A. Woman (Take 1) which has a really good vocal and some very interesting guitar from Robby and I presume Mark Benno. Also have to credit Jerry Scheff with a great bassline. Of the two LAW takes I like this one the best.
Love Her Madly (Take 1) is alright but probably the weakest of whats on offer (She Smells So Nice aside obviously). It sounds like a work through rather than an attempt at a take although Jim's vocal is pretty good.
The Changeling (Take 9) is pretty decent attempt and like the other take worth repeated hearing.
Crawling King Snake (Run Through and Studio Chatter) is just that and worth hearing simply as it gives an insight into the mechanics of The Doors in the studio.
Musically these out takes are really good and the band seemed to benefit from the atmosphere the Workshop brought. Who knows if they had managed the Whisky gigs that were talked about at the time to preview LA Woman we might, if they had taped them, have gotten something really special reminiscent of The Doors in they heyday.

The Workshop Sessions LP is simply disc two of the 2 CD LAW reissue on three sides of vinyl. Nothing different.
Glad you dug those amazon/iTunes bonus tracks! LAW is by far the best one on offer, though the others are worth hearing ... posts I've read on the Hoffman board seem to think it is better than the version on the CD (which I still haven't heard ... should arrive tomorrow).

Yes I know but I thought that the out takes deserved a thread of their own and as I could get a picture of the vinyl disc would put the lot CD, vinyl and digital under one roof to talk about. The LAW version bonus is indeed better than the one on the 2nd CD...hell it gives the actual LP track a run for it's money.

It is very good! Lacking Densmore's "latin-ish" drumming during the bridge, which, on the master, is what MAKES the tune!

Got the 2 CD a couple of days ago ... we had a gig Saturday night and a long drive home from Southend, so we threw on the first disc ... it was fantastic to hear the original mix again after many years. Nicely mastered, too. Andy, the guitarist, had only ever heard the 2007 remix. He thought the 1971 mix blew it away (and rightly so).
I have so far listened up thru L.A. Woman on the second disc. Looks like it will indeed bear repeated listening. The studio chatter is nice, too.
I do have a couple of nagging questions, though ... it sounds to me like Botnick mixed the 2nd disc in the style of the 2006 remixes. It sounds like there's some digital reverb going on in there.
Also, I remember waaaaay back when this project was announced that Jampol said Botnick was doing something (speaking with, employing services?) with Benno and Scheff. There was speculation that they might be overdubbing/adding parts to unfinished tracks. I highly doubt that they did this, since all these outtakes have a live-in-the-room feel. I wonder if they were just being interviewed or helping with the content for the currently AWOL 3 CD set/iPad app? I only ask, cuz all we've gotten, essay-wise, is a rather lame screed by David Fricke (whose stuff I usually like) in the liner notes (not to mention NO recording information; just a vauge reference to "the winter of 1970-71").
Any thoughts, people?

I always liked the original mix but then I only had a crappy record player. I cannot keep up with all the different mixes but enjoyed the one on the cube. Not being musicians most of us just listen with a fans ear but I admit that I never had a problem with the vinyl mix. I got the LAW LP version of this set as well and it sounded excellent.
I doubt that there was any overdubbing if they did not mention it. They made a point of saying that the NY disc had been overdubbed by John Sebastian as he was not miked up at the gig.
Any chance of you scanning the cover and liner notes mate? I saw them in HMV and they did not look that great but might be worth a read if you can scan them.

They are really not worth it. NOTHING relavatory or even mildly interesting. Got the Blu-ray in the post today and may have a screening this evening!

The original mix of LAW was on every release (including The Complete Studio Recordings cube) except the DVD-A, Perception box set and 2007 CD. Until this week, I only owned the 2007 CD (sold all my original Doors CDs in college, when I hated them, ha!). Yeah, I listen with all three sets of ears: Musician, Recording Enthusiast/Audiophile, and Fan, usually in that order, ha ha ha!

I am sure there isn't but if you are able I for one would like to have a look at them and it would be nice to have them on here for people to look at like all the other Doors albums we have here..

There you go see......I just use a fans rear and don't worry too much about the purity of the sound. I thought the cube was remixed by Botnick.

If you are an Elvis fan I imagine it will Now we have another one to get our teeth into. Spotify have a bonus track too. The WASP instrumental track. It is very enjoyable as it's the John and Ray show and it is cool to hear JD playing off Ray's organ (oooh Betty) rather than Jim's poetry. This out take exercise has been very worthwhile so far and has given us an insight into The Doors and the musical process. I was critical of this at first but have been quite struck by how wrong I was. I want more

Can one purchase from Spotify, or is it all a streaming subscription service. I plead ignorance! If you can get that track, could you pass it along? You owe me one, sir! That would be very cool to hear ... (Just wish they'd bloody put out the 3CD set and be done with this, though! I have decided that I do want it all now! Ha ha!)

I would have sent you it anyway mate and already had before I read your missive I just recorded it using my Absolute Sound recorder but it is a very good mp3 copy as far as I can hear. No idea about how Spotify works mate used it to get WASP and will likely never use it again
