I do have a humorous story from one of my travels to San Diego where I lived to L.A. Everytime a trip was made to LA we kept Jim in mind and proceeded to see the sights under the haze of a good buzz.
My friend and I stayed the Hyatt driving up there from San Diego. I had booked ahead of time and when we checked in we got upgraded to a penthouse room on the top of the hotel. Conviently located to the roof top pool.
We went to Benavitos' for lunch - former home of the Doors office and then walked downand across Santa Monica Blvd to Barney's Beanery.
We started drinking at Barney's Beanery around 2:00pm - we decided to drink Long Island Ice Teas exclusively for the entire evening. From Barney's we walked up to Sunset Blvd. It was really difficult to make that climb up the hill especially when you have a buzz, I don't see how Jim did so many times. We were walking down Sunset close to the Whisky and this guy comes up handing out these flyers for a band called Boloxi performing at the Roxy. The guy said just give this flyer to the guy at the Door and you'll get in free. So we did.
I don't know how long we were there but the longer we stayed the more we drank. Sitting there at a table watching this band who's performance was really quite good. The band members were'nt too bad looking either so we yelled out at them a few time, I should say more than a few times and time went on we noticed that there were these people sitting behind us with a video camera. Turns out these people were one of the band members parents. So somewhere, theres a video tape out there of me and my friend yelling rude remarks to someone's son who was performing at the Roxy.
My friend decides she has to go to the bathroom so she heads for the bathroom and she doesn't come back. I'm waiting and waiting my friend doesn't show up so I go looking for her. I open the outside door and there she is sitting on the toilet with the stall door open and she yells, "I like this fuckin' place, I like these fuckin' people."
After Bolixi leaves the stage we head down to the Whisky before closing time and since it's late we hope we can get in free. Worth a chance, right? We stagger down to the Whisky and there's this really big, I mean big guy at the door. He lets us in free, can't remember who was playing that night but it isn't long before the show is over and we find ourselves sitting on the stage at the Whisky. The bands packing up their equipment and there we are...next thing I know someone is trying to sit us up cause we kinda passed out on the stage. They kept telling us the bar was closing. All I can remember next is being stood on my feet and taken through these giant doors which was the side entrance to the Whisky, put in a taxi and then I remember crawling through the front doors of the Hyatt and the last I remember was puking in the sink in our room.
Sad that there are so many bits and pieces of my memory that are gone....but thats what happens when you have two much of a good time.
