“The first gig we ever played was at Hughes Aircraft where Ray’s mom worked…a Christmas party or something. We had to play Jazz standards and stuff like that..Jim had..we had never done a gig before and somehow we got through the gig. It was fun!” Robby Krieger on The Doors first gig
Fri November 19th 1965 Hughes Aircraft Union Dance Los Angeles CA (DU) From Doors On The Road
It is said that the band played private parties in October and November 1966 including on November 5th for the Pioneer Club private boat ride on November 5th. But it is not certain the date is correct even if that gig happened. So it is probably fair to say that, as Robby says, this was the bands first real gig. One wonders whether they did their own posters as many bands around that time did and how they went about promoting themselves. A much overlooked period in Doors History sadly and it's a shame that they have never felt it important enough to document rather than dribble on about nonsense like Miami.
One gig we do know a bit about is December 31st 1965 in Los Angeles. The band plays a party for some friends of the Krieger's. They mostly play requests in a loose arrangement interacting with the crowd while having a good time themselves. At midnight Jim tosses a quarter in the air, catches it in his mouth and swallows it! This is acknowledge his portrayal of a human jukebox for the number of song requests that evening.
