VIBRANT JAZZ-ROCK GROUP AT GAZZARRI’S by:Francine Grace Los Angeles Times
The Doors, a young jazz-rock group, opened last week to an enthusiastic capacity crowd in the dim ruby lights of Gazzarri’s on the Sunset Strip. They close Thursday night.
The group, four long-haired Venice boys in their early twenties were at UCLA when they banded together just over a year ago.
They resist labeling their sound and forsake fancy costumes for the shirts and jeans they wear all day. "No one’s ever going to put us in uniform," they say.
The Doors weld a rock ‘n’ roll beat with continuous jazz improvisation to produce an intense, highly emotional sound. They call their music "primitive and personal" and find it hard to work without audience reaction. Their numbers change constantly at live shows and new ones are written as they perform.
"We play and it just kinda happens," said one of the group.
Numbers start with the unhurried loud wail of an electric organ, joined by a low, groaning electric guitar and backed up by a steady drum. The words build with the music into an accelerating crescendo of frenzied sound.
Trying to avoid the "hard straight sound" of many rock groups, The Doors aim for "dramatic impact" in their music.
Gazzarri’s crowded dance floor proves that The Doors’ lyrical freedom hasn’t hurt their strong rock ‘n’ roll dance tempo.
