Ultra rare UK sheet music
One of the most phenomenal incidents in Doors History, considering how it actually came about, was the single 'Hello I Love You' becoming The Doors biggest worldwide hit in 1968.
First recorded as part of The Doors demo in September 1965 it was remembered by 10-year-old Adam Holzman (Jac’s son who is nowadays a successful musician….incidentally his first major break was helping on Ray’s interpretation of Carmina Burana) who was a huge fan of the band, from his dad signing them to Elektra in 1966.
Adam suggested it as a track for WFTS when it became apparent that the album centre-piece COTL was not going to be a viable track and the Doors were scrambling about in Jim's notebooks for music and lyrics to fill the void COTL had left.
At first it was rejected by the band as being too old but Jac persisted on behalf of his son and eventually talked them round and they recorded a new version for the album.
Quite fortuitous as the song went on to be one of their biggest hits and broke them in Europe as it was the only European hit single The Doors had during Jim’s life
US Promo 1968
The single was released at the end of June 1968 crawling into the Billboard chart at #108, cracking the top 30 on July 13th and reaching #1 on August 3rd.
For some bizarre reason when the single was released in Europe it was mistakenly titled ‘Hello I Love You, Won't You Tell Me Yor Name’.
Like many Brits I first heard the song on the radio when it was chosen as a Radio Luxembourg DJ Hit Pick during the summer of 1968..
It was nothing special but it was the spark that got me into The Doors as I filed them away for future reference and a couple of years later they were my favourite band. A couple of TV appearances helped the song become a minor Euro hit including a spot on our Top Of The Pops show which I watched but remember nothing of as they were just one of many bands doing the rounds at that time......only the photos that survive give a sense of what the HILY spot was like and Morrison was reported to have not been very impressed.
Cashbox Chart HILY hit #1 on August 17th
