Pride of Literary Lions Roar in to Oakland for National Poetry Month Convention this Weekend
RICHMOND, Calif., Apr. 22 (AScribe Newswire) -- National Poetry Month 2005, April, has roared in like a pride of literary lions, bringing from throughout California to the San Francisco Bay Area a large convocation of poets with the title of Poet Laureate given by their city or county, the first such gathering in California history.
Natica Angilly's Poetic Dance Theater Company of Artists Embassy International will present a pageantry of the nine Muses, (who are credited with inspiring poets and poetry since before 3000 BC), in real Mt Olympus style, to welcome the poets coming from all over the state to a convention at Oakland's new Clarion Hotel, 500 Hegenberger Road, this weekend, April 22-25.
Governor Arnold Schwarzeneger has sent Greetings and Commendation to the poets. Mayors of Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, San Leandro, Hayward, Benicia, have issued Proclamations and/or commendation for this event, which is coordinated by the California Federation of Chaparral Poets Inc, the oldest and largest poetry organization in the state.
The convention will also present the annual Elementary School students "Children's Poetry Fair" and a Junior/Senior high school poetry contest and awards ceremony, sponsored by CFCP Inc, which is the only group in the state to further recognition of students work in poetry to this extent.
The three day schedule, open to public registration, beginning at 3PM Friday, April 22, will end with a tour Monday April 25, 9-12AM led by Mary Rudge, (the convention program chairperson and the city of Alameda's first Poet Laureate) of Literary sites in Alameda where historical writers including Jack London, Jim Morrison (of The Doors), Phyllis Diller, William Saroyan, Robert Louis Stevenson, Robert Duncan, lived or wrote poetry.
The Convention program includes panels of publishers, editors, translators, educators, as well as a diversity of poetry styles demonstrated by Hip Hop, Rap, Slam, Spoken Word and Sound Poets, Hawaiian Dance as Language, poetry fused with dance as presented at the annual world-renowned San Francisco Dancing Poetry Festival, produced by Richard and Natica Angilly of Artists Embassy International. Credits for continuing education may be obtained through Cal State Hayward.
Workshops on Poetry as Aid to the Personal Spiritual Journey, Poets on War, Haiku workshops and numerous vibrant issues and popular poetry forms will be discussed during this unique focus on the state of the art of poetry in California. The convention theme is "California Voices."
California influenced the nation as the first state to have a Poet Laureate when Ina Coolbrith, Oakland's first City Librarian, who died at the age of 80 in 1928, was awarded the title, motivating other states to also acknowledge the significance of poetry and award poets.
Ideas, attitudes, and themes travel from California all over the world, having influence, setting trends. Poets affect literary fashion with creative innovations. Information from this gathering will be of use to educators planning curriculum. Sociologists will gain insights as to what it is about poetry that affects society. This is a rare and history making opportunity for people to interact with poets from throughout California. Rudge states " It is very exciting to have such high energy and glorious creative intellect in one event."
