Famously filmed as part of Feast Of Friends as Jim sketches out his tribute to his hero Fred, who collapsed into insanity after kissing a horse in the street, on a convenient piano backstage at the Saratoga Springs Performing Arts center on September 1st 1968. Jim's "Ode to Friedrich Nietzsche" Jim's "Ode to Friedrich Nietzsche" He threw his arms around the horse's neck
and kissed him everywhere
i love my horse
a crowd gathered
his landlord appeared
and took frederick back up to his room
on the second floor
where he began to
play the piano madly
and sing madly like
ooooooh.....i'm crucified and
inspected and
resurrected and
if you don't believe that
i'll give you my latest
philanthropic sonata
and the landlord's family was amazed
so they sent for his friend Overbeck
and he got there in three days by coach
and they took frederick to the asylum
and his mother joined him
and for the next fifteen years
they cried
and cried
and laughed
and looked at the sun
and everyone

Jim's tribute to fred is on the soft parade dvd. I like the soft parade for its littel gems like this. the tribute make me laugh. did fred really kiss a horse and go insane? I also like the bit on TSP where jim gets talking to that priest dude about the doors concerts being a religous experience. Jim looks like he is humouring the religious freak ,although as far as priests and hateful religous people go that dude wasnt to bad....he liked the doors! lol

I'm no expert but from what I know he delibrately caught the clap because he wanted his brain to burn with fever and as it got worse he became more and more delusional....eventually he ran out into the street and began kissing a horse and was shortly afterwards carted off to the nut house.... basically what Jim says....

I thought Fred stopped a farmer from beating his horse to death & they threw him into the asylum. You can whip the horse's eyes

Unless I'm confusing his life with his work... I thought in thus spake Zarathustra, after coming down from the mountain, he stops a man from beating a horse?
