I quite like FOF,It imo really captures the feel of that moment in time when it was made, pity it had to get ripped to shreads and put in doors vids. I'd Love to see it on DVD, Frank L Would do a great job with it im certain.  Imagine a commentary with frank and outtakes as extras  |

I would not say it was 'excellent stuff' by a long chalk but it had some great footage. It is seriously flawed in the respect that the intended narrative is so fragmented and the biggest flaw is the soundtrack......to go to so much trouble to film the Doors shows and not take a bit of trouble to record the music for a soundtrack is stupid and these flaws show Jim Morrison was about as much use as a film-maker as his mate Ray. I stand with Ray and his criticism that The Doors had spent all this money and all they got was a 40 minute mess....true Ray did not like Jim's mates as they were taking Jim away from his vision of what should be....but Ray had a bloody good point. It was supposed to be some kinda Doors documentary intended for a cinema release but instead comes out like a bad home movie. The only decent bit being the Bowl version of The End which was recorded in its (near) entirity for a different reason. Like HWY Jim shows a severe lack of cinematic insight of which the prime motivation of a film-maker is not to BORE his audience. FOF is pretty dull and rather badly edited. It makes little sense to anyone but a Doors fan and is of even less interest to anyone outside the Doors circle. Its merits are its a great piece of Doors history for the fans and it should have been released years ago. Frank has hinted at some out-takes existing so maybe a few that did not end up in the bin could be found and used on a DVD as extras. A commentary from Frank and maybe someone like Babe Hill or Bill Siddons would be great. Will it see the light of day? God knows....Doors PLC and the Coursons are such greedy bastards that only if they could screw a decent buck out of it will it ever be released. If these people had any integrity it would have been released as a DVD extra long ago as would HWY which would have been a perfect addition to the Morrison tribute DVD Eagle released.... But sadly 'integrity'and 'for the fans' are terms these people have never heard of..... Could have been a LOT better .....Jim and the boys may have had fun but its more like a film a buncha kids would make in thier back garden than a serious attempt to document a rock band...... This two day benefit consists of poetry readings and short films in an effort to raise money for Norman Mailer's New York campaign for mayor.
'Feast of Friends' is shown as well as Andy Warhol's
'I, A Man'. On both nights, Jim nervously reads his
"An American Prayer" poem and is later accompanied by Robby Krieger on guitar and together they perform a few blues songs including Elvis's "I Will Never Be Untrue", in which the second evening's performance is recorded and included on the 1978 album release of "An American Prayer"
Also reading poetry: Michael McClure, Tom Baker, Seymour Cassel, Michael C. Ford, Mary Waronov, Jamie Sanchez, Jack Hirschmann and Utra Violet

Feast of Friends is shown at 9:30 p.m. along with another film for the Eleventh Vancouver International Film Festival.
Willingdon Juvenile Detention Home For Girls, Vancouver, Canada. July 4th 1969.
This one is a fascinating little addition to Doors history.
The film Feast Of Friends is shown to the inmates and is met with unrestrained wild applause and cheers of anticipation. But whenthe film ends the girls sit motionless before leaving the screening room without uttering a word.
Solomon Little Theatre US International University San Diego. August 18th 1969.
As part of a Creative Arts conference Jim Morrison makes a personal appearance to promote the film.
Edinburgh Film Festival Scotland UK. August 31st 1969.
Feast of Friends is shown along with Easy Rider and One Plus One the Rolling Stones film which later became known as Sympathy For The Devil.
Varsity Arena. Toronto Canada. September 6th 1969.
As a precursor to the Toronto Rock & Roll Festival which The Doors will take part in the weekend after a festival of Doors films including Feast of Friends, and several Doors promo films is held with Kim Fowley as host.

The 'official' World Premiere of The Doors documentary Feast of Friends is presented at the Cinematheque 16 disco in Hollywood, Los Angeles........
Wonder if there are any photos of this event........who was there from The Doors circle?
So many gaps in the History of this band.....

I don't understand either if they were The Doors live why they wouldn't want live sound, seems like a stupid decision. & it probably was over-edited in an Hour for Magic isn't there a description by Frank of Jim editing it, Frank, and possibly someone else, maybe I should go look it up.
& no matter what Ray's opinion has been it never stopped him from chopping up pieces of FOF to use in video's and the such.

its great the fact that its a piece of doors history and i was excited about it before i saw it, but it aint really that great to be fair....it could have been much better. infact to be honest i cant remember the whole lot, which goes to show how memorable it is to me  |

Saturday June 21st at the Regency Hyatt House Hotel Awards Ceremony for the Atlanta International Film Festival Jim and Frank Lisciandro are presented with a Gold Medal award for Feast Of Friends..........Probably awarded because of The Doors popularity rather than because its any good.
Jim himself recognised that he was feted at these things due to his celebrity not his talent..........he once mentioned this very fact to Babe Hill at a poetry gathering he was invited to.........
The festival probably gained a lot of publicity from awarding THE Jim Morrison a prize for what is in effect a pretty poor documentary on a rock group.........

In March 1968 The Doors decide to begin production of a documentary film to be compiled from live concert footage and interspersed with behind the scenes footage of the band on tour.
They begin shooting the documentary while touring in April 1968.
It concludes with the final performance before departing for Europe in September.
Three associates of the band are employed as productuion crew for the project.
1 Paul Ferrara: Director of cinematography. (film and design).
Paul began with 16mm B/W then switched to colour.
2 Babe Hill: Location live sound recording.
Babe used a portable Hagra reel to reel tape recorder.

March 1969Feast Of Friends Completed.A year after the project began it is finally completed due in no small part to Jim Morrison who completes the project after the other three Doors express their doubts about it and stop funding it. It is interesting that Jim Morrison kept faith in the project and attended several screenings whilst another UCLA film graduate Ray Manzarek seems to have washed his hands until it's use in the Doors sponsored film When You're Strange in 2009. Jerry Hopkins reviewed the film for Rolling Stone. " Many filmed dramas and documentaries have shown the clutching hands and ecstatic faces that confront the musician or singer but no film before Feast Of Friends has captured in so an exciting a manner what actually takes place during a near riot." It then goes on to describe the Singer Bowl events. It concludes with. "Morrison has often said the film is an attempt to capture some of what they see on their travels. In an impressive and carefully paced filmic collage this goal was achieved.

Today, Thursday June 19th the film is shown as part of a Free Press benefit for The Georgia Straight underground newspaper in the PNE Gardens Vancouver Canada. In February 1969 one of thier staff Korky Day was arrested and charged with selling the Georgia Straight in Richmond, British Columbia and a defense fund was set up to contest the charges "possession of obscene matter with intent to distribute". It was later discovered that the Canadian authorities could only object to one of the cartoons in the paper. Jim Morrison may well have wanted to attend but was actually in Georgia for the Atlanta Film festival the next day with Frank Lisciandro for the screening of Feast Of Friends on the Friday afternoon. he surely empathised with them as they were basically up for the same beef as he was. www.rickmcgrath.com/georgia_straight/staffers.html |
