The Bob Rivers Show archives feature an audio interview with John
Densmore recorded June 26, 2002. The interview is 8 min. 10 sec.
long. John discusses his "Nation" magzine article and his stance
against "the Doors" music being used for commerical purposes. John
indicates veto power exists within the band and he is constantly
vetoing any offers for commerical use.
John explained that he slipped one time and let Riders On The Storm
be used in England for a tire commerical. He said he thought about
what he had done and donated his portion of the profit to charity out
of his respect for Jims' wishes. John went on to say that the fans
attach special meanings to Doors songs and the importantance of the
songs not to be commericalized. He also told the story of Jims
reaction when he returned from London to find Light My Fire had been
sold to Buick.
Bob Rivers tells John that he understands that other members of The
Doors do not have the same feelings as John when it comes to selling
the Doors catalog for commericals. John didn't mention which band
member was for commericalism but he did say that the surviving Doors
make enough money to live off of comfortably.
Unlike so many of Rays' interviews where he slams John for one reason
or another, John does not display any bad feelings to the press even
though he doesn't agree with Rays opinion about commericalism. In
fact Rays' name is not even mentioned in this interview.
