Interviews: 5 Questions With John Densmore

What has most influenced you musically, and why?
Jazz has been one of the major influences on me musically because of improvisation being it's core. When a jazz musician takes a solo and improvises on the chord changes, he is freed up to express spontaneously his feelings. Jazz drummers also are very free to improvise continually with the rhythm. It gave me the courage to try and have a musical "conversation" with Jim Morrison, and drive Ray and Robby in their solos.

What is your all-time favorite piece of musical gear, and why?
My Ludwig snare drum was and is still my favorite piece of equipment. It's sound is fat and sharp.
What was the best show you ever played, and why?
The Roundhouse in London England was one of the best performances we ever did. I think part of the reason was because it was early in our career, our first time in Europe, and we desperately want to blow everybody's mind!
Looking back, is there anything you would do differently in your career?
I would do a lot different because hopefully I would have learned from my experiences... but on the other hand I wouldn't change a thing, cause I like myself and how things turned out!
How do you keep your chops up?
Frankly, I don't... but if there are some gigs coming up, I go into the woodshed, and get everything back!
