Yeah Honestly I think OV is just as good as The Soft Parade (cept vocally, although I do dig Ray's voice)

I dunno why everyone keeps bashing the vocals. They sound just fine to me and I'm a musician. You guys gotta stop comparing it to "how Jim would have sung it"

Its really impossible NOT to compare the vocals to Jim. I got the album in 1971 and thats the first thing I did. I love Rays vocals and always enjoyed his backing to Jim but its not possible to listen to OV/FC without comparing what went before. Its not fair to Ray and Robby as the albums should be judged seperately from the first six albums but who ever said life was fair....

I love Ray's vocals, I hope it didn't seem like I think otherwise.

Yes it is. It only isn't if Jim is your favorite member. A band isn't all about the singer. Look what happened to Robert Plant. lol
As soon as I heard "In The Eye Of The Sun" I thought... "cool. He sounds just like he did on 'Close To You' and 'You Need Meat' In fact.. part of the reason I wanted OV is because I wanted to hear more of that voice of his.
And when I heard Robby's vocals. I thought... "oo kinda sounds like bob dylan" Neat. They're in key.. they both know how to harmonize as good as if not better then Jim ever did. I enjoyed the music and didn't (don't) take too much stock in the vocals.
I didn't even thought about Jim singing any of the songs till someone mentioned about "Down On The Farm" being kicked around during the LA Woman sessions.

When I first heard Other Voices I don't think I was thinking in terms of my fave member of the band as I was just starting to find out about them. All I really had was Mike Jahn's book and a couple of articles in the Waiting For The Sun Songbook and Doors Complete Songbook . I liked the lyrics but did not know enough about the band to have a fave member in 1971. Although one tends to drift towards the singer as i did obviously over the next couple of years. I was a big fan of the album then as I am now but it was still impossible to listen to it without comparing it to the LA Woman album and the other Doors stuff I had. I had heard Runnin' Blue with Robby's vocal and thought that a bit of a dud....although I did grow to like it. Ray I had heard on Close To You and liked his style. But Other Voices had the Doors on the cover so was always gonna be compared to the band as a fourpiece. Same if the singer from one of my other fave bands had got the gig in 1973. Howard Werth is an amazing vocalist with Audience and I loved that band ....as I do today. But if Howard had gotten the Doors spot he would have been compared to Morrison even by people like me who were big fans.....its just human nature to do that.

Werth should have been compared more so because he would have been a direct replacment. A singer for a singer. The other doors werent replacing Jim. They took turns filling in.
I guess because I'm a musician I look at it from the point of view of them.

well i gotta say the more i listen to OV the more i love it. ray and robbies vocals sound just fine to me, i like em. and without Jim the band wee still great, the album is great. it is probably one of my faves to be completely honest, its pretty up beat too. when we were talking about whether or not they would suit jim, it doesnt really matter, they suit ray and robbies vocals. although i can here jim singing down on the farm more now. Its a bit of a crime this album wasnt appreciated by doors fans. it does sound slightly un doors like without jim's input. but once you get past the original shock of not listening to jim singing, you can start to appreciate that t does sound more doorsy than you first think. irrelevant of weather or not this was a doors album or not, i would love it anyway. the doors management are mother hubards for not recognising this album.

I'm going to have to exalt you for that! :-) "In The Eye Of The Sun" to me sounds the most like a typical Jim era Doors song.
